Echezeaux is one of the largest Grand Cru vineyards in the region, boasting several top-level producers with plots of land on their property. The 2014 Echezeaux Grand Cru has ripe, attractive, well-defined aromas of wildflowers, red berries, orange peel, and campfire smoke - an aroma you want to inhale constantly! On the palate, this is bright Echezeaux, full-bodied, with a deep and juicy fruit core, satiny tannins, and a very long aftertaste. Very appetizing!

Mathilde and Hubert are at the helm of the company under the leadership of their father Etienne Grivot, and it seems to be one of the most successful transitions from one generation to the next in all of Burgundy. This generation has a domaine that has truly broken into the upper echelon of Vosne-Romanee, with wines that consistently delight both at various dinners and blind tastings. That Grivot produces some of the best wines in the region is undeniable. It is worth noting that in 2008, Domaine Jean Grivot began to evolve towards softer extraction and greater transparency. Thanks to the dense planting of old vines (the average age of the vines is 45-50 years) with organic farming, grape yields are low, producing a complex red Burgundy worthy of a place in any cellar. Domaine Jean Grivot adheres to biodynamic practices, working in harmony with the environment. The wines are bottled unfiltered according to the lunar movements. Their grand cru vineyards include Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, and Échezeaux.

A super-fresh and spicy nose offers up a tantalizingly layered mix of ripe dark berries, sandalwood and exotic Asian-style tea aromas. The sleek, rich and beautifully detailed medium-bodied flavors that also coat the palate with an abundance of dry extract that simultaneously serves to buffer the very firm tannic spine that shapes the tight, compact and focused finale that demonstrates stunningly good length. Once again this is clearly going to need an extended stay in a cool cellar but it should be well worth the wait.

The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a deep, broody bouquet with blackberry and raspberry confit aromas, a touch of fig in the background lending a touch of exoticism but nothing extreme. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannin, a little grainy in texture with a deep well of blackberry and raspberry fruit infused with slightly savory, meaty notes towards the finish that gently fans out. Good material/substance here -- it deserves 3-5 years in bottle. Builders. I've seen a lot of them over the last few weeks what with my loft conversion -- completion date March 2037. And there were more when I pulled up opposite Domaine Jean Grivot, where he is constructing a new reception and tasting room for the stream of visitors through his door. I asked whether he was building a roof-top infinity pool, but sadly that seemed to be overlooked in the planning stage. Then I thought perhaps a helicopter pad given that he has a license. Useful for commuting between Vosne-Romanée and Beaune.

Suave and fleshy, delivering cherry, plum, mineral, spice and smoke aromas and flavors. So dense and muscular, this sucks the moisture from your palate, only to return on the long, chalky aftertaste.
