Richebourg Grand Cru 2019 Domaine Hudelot Noellat

Vendor code : 181

Domaine Hudelot-Noellat is an iconic Burgundy winery. Domain owns about 10 hectares of vineyards in five communes, including premier and grand cru sites. These are sites with excellent terroir and often old vines over 50 years old. Most of the wines are predetermined for export and are extremely limited. To conclude a contract with such a winery is a great success.

Richebourg comes from a plot of 0.29 hectares. Production - 1400 bottles. The wine is aged 16 months in oak barrels. Hand-harvested grapes, fermentation on indigenous yeast, and small production create a great example of top Pinot. This wine shows all of the subtleness and complexity of Burgundy Pinot Noir. Sparkling dark ruby colour. The breadth of the bouquet includes small red and black berries, violets, spices, and undergrowth over time. In the mouth, clear and powerful body, delicate and sensual, candid and complete.

The wines of Hudelot-Noëllat are often mentioned in comparison to other grands crus from Vosne-Romanee - Domaine Leroy, for example. Premier and Grand Cru Vosne-Romanee are the main trump cards of the estate, which Charles has been able to present impeccably. Followers of Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat are familiar with Charles Van Canneyt's approach in the winery and cellar: predominantly stemless grapes are fermented in cement tanks for two to three weeks of classic maceration. Barrel aging, which emphasizes François Frères and Cavin plays a supporting role, continues for 18 months, except for Bourgogne Rouge. These methods, combined with an enviable palette of appellations planted with very old vines (the average age is over 50 years, some dating back to 1920, including plots in Romanee-Saint-Vivant), produce substantial wines with impressive aging potential.

The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru is much more backward on the nose compared to the outgoing Romanée-Saint-Vivant, offering dark berry fruit, cold wet limestone, briar and hints of iris flower, but showing fabulous delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins framing extraordinary pure black fruit suffused with even more mineralité than the aforementioned RSV. It fans out wonderfully on the finish and asserts its authority over the rest of Hudelot-Noëllat’s portfolio. Brilliant.

A brilliant wine in the making, the 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru offers up aromas of wild berries, orange rind, plums, warm spices, licorice and incense. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's layered and textural, with a broad attack that segues into a deep, lively and multidimensional core, concluding with a bright, precise finish of notable duration. This will be well worth ardent pursuit. I deferred my tasting with Charles Van Canneyt until as late as possible, as he told me that several protracted malolactic fermentations had only just concluded by the end of harvest 2020. The wines were worth the wait, however, as this is a terrific success for Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. Rich, dramatic and concentrated, with vibrant fruit tones and ripe tannins, everything reviewed here comes recommended. Yields were low, and alcohol levels range between 13.5% and 14.5%, but the wines are more dynamic than their 2018 counterparts (which a packed schedule precluded me from revisiting on this occasion, something I'll endeavor to remedy before too long).

Here the nose is inexpressive to the point of being almost mute and it requires considerable swirling to coax the intensely floral-suffused aromas of spicy jasmine tea, orange peel and dark berries to reveal themselves. There is stunningly good power and intensity to the backward broad-shouldered flavors that brim with an abundance of dry extract and an almost pungent minerality on the precise, dusty and gorgeously long finish that is just a bit more structured. This is seriously good juice with the potential to match.
