Sammarco 1999 Castello dei Rampolla

Vendor code : 134

Castello dei Rampolla is all about biodynamics, nuanced style, and a penchant for graceful aging. The land on which Castello dei Rampolla stands has been owned by the family since 1739. The winery was one of the first to start producing wines based on French grape varieties. This is partly due to the watchful eye of Giacomo Tachis, an oenologist who previously advised Sassicaia. Production is tiny, between 8,000 and 25,000 bottles per year depending on the vintage.

Sammarco, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese, is one of Tuscany's great classics. The aroma has hints of cigar tobacco mixed with smoke, minerals, blackcurrant, and vanilla. Elegant on the palate, with excellent richness, purity, and overall harmony.

Wine Advocate
Robert M. Parker, Jr.: "The Sammarco, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese, has been one of Tuscany's great classics for nearly two decades. The 1999 Sammarco is tight and closed, but wow, what potential! A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of high class cigar tobacco intermixed with smoke, minerals, black currants, and vanilla. In the mouth, it is dense, medium to full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and overall harmony. Cellaring is mandatory for this backward, still primary 1999. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. A classic!".
