Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Champs Gains 2016 Domaine Paul Pillot

Vendor code : 59

Thierry Pillot and his sister Chrystelle are rising stars of Burgundy winemaking. In truth, the concentration of good reviews for these young and talented winemakers is truly breathtaking. The winery refused to add artificial yeast, and the percentage of new barrels reaches a maximum of 10%. Such decisions require courage but are crucial for creating great wines. Style: restrained, mineral.

Les Champs Gains comes from 45-year-old vines. The aroma is dominated by hints of beeswax, confectionery, yellow apple, and minerals. The taste is medium to full-bodied, with a bright freshness, chalky extract, and a clean, lingering aftertaste. A perfectly balanced premier cru wine.

The young generation traditionally carries the responsibility for the renowned Domaine Paul Pillot. The founder took charge of the domaine at the young age of twenty, and subsequently, his children, Thierry and Christel, assumed leadership with full autonomy granted by the older generation. With great enthusiasm, they joined the emerging movement of innovative winemakers in Côte d'Or, reinterpreting the classic Burgundy wine style. Their pursuit involved striking the perfect balance between concentration and freshness in the wine while preserving the grape's maturity. They meticulously selected delicate and precise aging techniques, avoiding excessive use of new oak, to maintain the fruity and mineral aspects of the aroma and taste. Through these straightforward yet essential principles, Domaine Paul Pillot has established its distinct style. These wines serve as a transparent lens, amplifying and intricately capturing all the nuances of the esteemed Chassagne-Montrachet terroirs.

Deep-tinted pinot noir with black doris plum, dark cherry and berries, together with a seasoning of five-spice. Quite firmly structured with underlying complexity that promises to reveal itself with bottle age. A seriously good pinot noir.

The 2020 Pinot Noir Bannockburn is welcoming as well as rich, savory and sinewy, delivering a plump cloud of both lifted and brooding fruit: a portion of whole-cluster fermentation has brought herbal and violet high notes alongside red and black cherry. There's excellent concentration despite this being the entry to the Felton Pinot range, and fine, lightly furry tannins on the medium-long finish. This could be approached now, but it’s better to wait a couple of years to let the components settle.
