Domaine Du Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2005

Vendor code : 906

"To make great wine you have to know when to take risks" - Louis-Michel. Today, the glory of the Liger-Belair family name lives on in a small in terms of production, but very prestigious Domaine, which includes the smallest grand cru in Burgundy and the smallest AOC in France - La Romanée, whose monopole owner is Domaine Du Comte Liger-Belair. The style is biodynamic in its purest form. These are dramatic wines that are often very demonstrative at a young age. La Romanée Monopoly is regularly ranked among the most expensive wines produced in Burgundy. The prices of this wine increase significantly from year to year.

The 2005 La Romanée Grand Cru has a distinctively impressive character, with interesting aromas of caramel, red berries, and subtle maritime undertones. On the palate it balances on the rope, paradoxically intense yet with a supple tannin structure backed by a backbone of acidity. The finish offers notes of chocolate and a tantalizing interplay with black truffle. Drink: 2023 - 2045.

Wine Advocate
Neal Martin: "Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2005 La Romanée Grand Cru from Comte Liger-Belair has a very refined bouquet, far superior to the previous two vintages with black plum, cranberry and subtle marine influences, though it is still tightly-wound at the moment. But there is real class here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin and very well-judged acidity. There is a touch of spice here, real tension with black truffle on the finish. This is an superb La Romanée but one that needs another few years. Tasted June 2015".

Burghound
There is enough reduction present to knock down the spice and fruit aspects of the otherwise notably ripe nose. There is positively superb density to the velvety, powerful and broad-shouldered medium full-bodied flavors that are seductively textured though the explosively long and almost painfully intense finish tightens up in a real rush. This is bold and robust vintage for La Romanée that isn't even remotely ready and one that will last for decades but the incredible potential is evident.

Vinous
Liger-Belair's 2005 La Romanée is powerful and intense, but also elegant at the same time. Deep, rich and beautifully layered, the 2005 is going to need another decade or so to fully blossom. The flavors are dark and resonant, with plenty of red cherry, plum, spice and floral notes buffered by a real sense of vertical energy. If opened within the next few years, the 2005 needs a good bit of air for some of the reductive notes to blow off.
