Early on, one can already surmise that the 2022 Château Lafite Rothschild will be one of the great wines of more than just this vintage. A deep purple-black colored wine, it needs some aeration to reveal aromas of dark berries, cassis, sweet soil tones, cigars, and pencil lead. An exquisite, medium-bodied palate with layers of black soil-tinged fruit and exquisitely ripe, Lafite-only tannins. This simply stunning, exquisitely crafted 2022 with a uniquely expressive Lafite imprint will need 7-8 years in bottle, after which it will continue to inspire confidence for the next 40+ years.

The first known mention of Lafite dates back to 1234 and is attributed to Gombaud de Lafite. In 1815, the broker Guillaume Lawton perfectly characterized this wine, calling it the most elegant, refined, and delicate of the three (best wines). The area of Château Lafite Rothschild is about 110 hectares with about 900,000 vines planted. This figure has decreased, this is because Lafite got rid of some less well-located plots that never produced wines appropriate for inclusion in the Grand Vin of Château Lafite Rothschild. In addition, an organic transition is underway from 2021 (15 hectares are being treated biodynamically). Cover crops have been added to the agronomic arsenal of the viticulture team, with good results in areas with wetter or clay-rich soils. The malolactic fermentation of Château Lafite Rothschild, as always, takes place in a tank, while the maturation of the wine takes place in barrels, mostly made in-house. Each vintage is traditionally filtered with egg white (up to 8,000 eggs are required). At Château Lafite Rothschild, there is a tendency to have less and less Merlot in the assemblage. According to the Lambier Wines team, the 2022 Château Lafite Rothschild has every chance of being the best of the decade.

Vinous
The 2022 Lafite-Rothschild was picked from 31 August to 24 September and apart from the 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, there is 17.5% pressed wine in the blend. The IPT is slightly lower than 2020. There is 13.6% alcohol this year, higher than 2018 and 2019. It has an intense bouquet with blackberry, crushed stone, touches of pencil box and undergrowth, very Lafite-Rothschild in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, perfectly judged acidity, linear and focused. Compared to vintages a couple of decades ago, there is mid-palate weight, yet it retains classicism and transparency, while delivering quite a gentle but insistent grip on the finish. Perpetually the most deceptive of First Growth, one should not doubt its long-term potential. [Neal Martin, 16/05/2023]

Wine Advocate
William Kelley:"A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Lafite Rothschild unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, sweet soils tones, cigar box and lilac. Medium to full-bodied, it's the most tensile of the first growths this year, with a layered, concentrated but youthfully introverted mid-palate, lively acids and a long, saline finish. It checks in at a rather high pH of 3.85, which belies its incisive profile, from a harvest that extended from August 31 to September 24."

Jancis Robinson: "94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. 33 hl/ha. Cask sample. Precise and long with sublimated force. Darker colour than usual. Deep and fathomless in terms of expression, dark-fruit and graphite notes dominating. Impressive fruit on the palate, the tannins powerful but suave and fully integrated. Long life ahead. "
