In the 1855 Bordeaux classification, Chateau Palmer was classified in the third class, although many experts argue that it should have been given a higher status. Interestingly, Chateau Palmer wines have a high proportion of Merlot in their composition, which gives them a unique style - something unusual for the region. Very deep garnet-purple in color, the Chateau Palmer 2022 bursts from the glass with aromas of blackberry, blueberry pie, flowers, cedar, and spice with hints of burning embers. Full-bodied, and crafted in a decadent style, it offers layer upon layer of tinned black fruits and exotic spices framed by tannins, finishing with epic length. The 2022 Chateau Palmer is a remarkably beautiful wine - for hedonists!
The team at Chateau Palmer continues to create wines of unique texture and power at this historic Margaux estate, where for the past two decades there has been an emphasis on viticulture and vinification at each site, as well as the introduction of innovative biodynamic techniques. Today, cover crops have been introduced at Chateau Palmer, and fruit trees are placed in rows as part of agroforestry initiatives. The base of Chateau Palmer is the plateau around the chateau, where the soils are a mixture of sandy gravel, gravel with a high clay content, sandy gravel again, and finally one meter of pure clay. Old vine Merlot grown in these soils gives Chateau Palmer wines their richness and density. The Chateau Palmer vineyards cover an area of 66 hectares and are planted with 47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 38 years. Although the current Merlot ratio of 47% already distinguishes Chateau Palmer on the Left Bank, there was a time when it was even higher, reaching almost 60%, especially after 1945 when a significant proportion of Merlot was planted. It's worth noting that the vineyard previously included Cabernet Franc, but those vines have been removed. Chateau Palmer boasts older vines, some of which are over 70 years old. The terroir of Chateau Palmer is complex and includes 18 different soil types, which are also divided into 114 separate plots. Chateau Palmer has consistently produced outstanding vintages over the years including 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2012, 2010, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2005, 2004, 2004, 2000, 2000, 1999, 1989, 1983, 1970, 1970, 1966, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1953, 1953, 1945, 1929, 1928, 1921 and 1900. This extensive list emphasizes the remarkable consistency of the Chateau Palmer winery and makes it one of the most reliable in the Bordeaux region.

William Kelley:"As is the case at neighbor Château Margaux, the 2022 Palmer is one of the most powerful wines this estate has ever produced. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, it offers up aromas of blackberries, burning embers, violets, iris and sweet soil tones, followed by a full-bodied, broad and expansive palate, its velvety attack segueing into a rich and layered core. Supple, seamless and concentrated, it checks in at 14.4% alcohol and a rather high pH of 3.79."

Neal Martin:"The 2022 Palmer was cropped at just 22hL/ha due to the berries being 25-30% smaller than usual. It bursts forth on the nose with precocious black cherries, blueberry, violet and touches of marmalade and tobacco in the background. Complex and expressive. The palate is structured, with the tannic backbone, that winemaker Thomas Duroux talked about, lending this Palmer a sense of verticality. Hints of black pepper emerge with time, multi-layered, a powerful Margaux and yet the IPT is actually lower than elsewhere (76). Quite linear on the tobacco-infused finish, which is just quintessential Palmer. Do reserve a bin in your cellar for this and let it gather dust for at least a decade. 14.4% alcohol. 2035-2080."
