Clos de Vougeot was founded around 1110 AD by monks who remained its owners until the French Revolution. Clos de Vougeot is a Burgundian icon. The domain owns a plot of 1.87 hectares. This is of the most exciting Pinot Noir. The wine exhibits attractive aromas of red berries, cherries, red flowers, and graphite. The wine is full-bodied, with great energy, firm tannins, and a fruity core.

Mathilde and Hubert are at the helm of the company under the leadership of their father Etienne Grivot, and it seems to be one of the most successful transitions from one generation to the next in all of Burgundy. This generation has a domaine that has truly broken into the upper echelon of Vosne-Romanee, with wines that consistently delight both at various dinners and blind tastings. That Grivot produces some of the best wines in the region is undeniable. It is worth noting that in 2008, Domaine Jean Grivot began to evolve towards softer extraction and greater transparency. Thanks to the dense planting of old vines (the average age of the vines is 45-50 years) with organic farming, grape yields are low, producing a complex red Burgundy worthy of a place in any cellar. Domaine Jean Grivot adheres to biodynamic practices, working in harmony with the environment. The wines are bottled unfiltered according to the lunar movements. Their grand cru vineyards include Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, and Échezeaux.

The 2010 Clos de Vougeot is another fabulous wine bursting with energy and a sense of urgency that is hard to capture with mere words. Freshly cut roses, crushed rocks and red berries come together beautifully in the glass. The Clos de Vougeot is impeccable and totally engaging from start to finish. The only possible downside is that the seriously firm tannins will require considerable bottle age to soften.

Burghound
An earthy, pure and magnificently complex nose of a ripe combination of wild red berry fruit, discreet spice and earth notes plus an undertone of sauvage is trimmed in discreet but not invisible wood treatment. There is also plenty of earth on the rich, full-bodied and overtly powerful flavors that possess excellent volume. This is a very serious example of the appellation as the supporting tannins are decidedly prominent, indeed to the point that the strikingly long finish is distinctly austere yet there is no detectable rusticity. A classic Clos de Vougeot that will require at least 15 plus years of cellar time.

Good bright, medium red. Pungent minerality, complex soil tones and noble herbs on the nose. Then sweeter and fuller than the Beaux Monts in the mouth, with slightly medicinal cherry and marzipan flavors complicated by herbs and underbrush. With its solid acidity, this is ultimately more backward than the Beaux Monts. Most impressive today on the back end, which features substantial ripe tannins and building flavors of black cherry, licorice and mint. The pHs in 2010 are in the 3.45 to 3.5 range, noted Grivot, with acidities between 3.6 and 3.7 grams per liter.
