Chateau Ausone is named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who owned some of the vineyards around Saint-Emilion. If you ask almost any château owner to name the best terroir in Bordeaux, the vast majority will say Chateau Ausone, resulting in one of the region's most characterful and long-lasting wines, endowed with remarkable intensity, precision, and persistence. This terroir has turned Chateau Ausone into one of the best producers in the world, as evidenced in the Chateau Ausone 2022 (one of the best vintages of the Chateau).
The 2022 Chapelle d'Ausone (Chateau Ausone's second wine) bursts from the glass with vibrant aromas of raspberry jelly and cherry, giving way to hints of incense and garrigue. Full-bodied, with juicy layers of black and red berries, framed by perfectly ripe, fine-grained tannins, it finishes long. Delicious right now!
Château Ausone is one of four wines, according to the 2012 Official Classification of Saint-Emilion, of the Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" category, i.e. the highest in the classification. Château Ausone is located on a hillside outside St-Emilion with steeply terraced vineyards facing south. The château takes its name from the ancient Roman poet Ausoneus, who was famous for his writings on viticulture and according to legend lived in the area where the château now stands. Château Ausone owns 7 hectares of vineyards in St Emilion, planted at a density of 6,500 to 12,600 vines per hectare. The steep, hillside, calcareous terroir is complemented by a clay content of 15 to 20%. This soil composition gives the wines of Chateau Ausone an intense mineral character. The vineyard is partly in a low-lying area, which preserves the grapes from frost. The vines have an average age of 50 years. Château Ausone also has some of the oldest vines in St Emilion, the oldest of which were planted in 1906. Yields are kept low, averaging 33 hl/ha. The Château Ausone vineyard is planted with 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. There are also a small number of Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which only go into the production of the second wine. The small size of the vineyard allows for proper attention to be given to each vine. The modern style of Chateau Ausone is unique - minerality from massive deposits of limestone in the soil, the berries retain the purity of varietal flavors, and the wine is rich, full-bodied, and concentrated but not heavy. On the palate, there is a generous tannin structure, but the tannins are ripe. A wine with powerful aromatics and organoleptic richness. When young, Château Ausone wines can be tannic and require at least 10 years to develop in a bottle. Château Ausone is built for aging, has tremendous aging potential, and can live for 50-100 years under proper storage conditions.
