Le Petit Cheval 2022 is full of aromas of plum, sweet forest berries, rose petals, spices, and cigar wrappers. The palate is velvety and smooth on the palate, with supple tannins. The 2022 Le Petit Cheval represents everything that is not in the Grand Vin blend. Nevertheless, it certainly shares some of the latter's DNA traits.

Château Cheval Blanc is located in the commune of Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux region, and according to the Official Classification of Saint-Emilion wines, the estate belongs to the Premier Grand Cru Classé "A", i.e. the highest category in the classification. The terroir of Cheval Blanc is unique, composed of a mosaic of clay, sand, and gravel. The geological origin of the soils dates back to the Quaternary period. Cheval Blanc was born from the combination of an exceptional terroir and a blend of two varieties that give the wine its personality. The Château Cheval Blanc vineyard is planted with two varieties: 58% Cabernet Franc and 42% Merlot. Cheval Blanc is one of the few estates whose vineyards have remained unchanged since 1871, and the success of Château Cheval Blanc is due to its genetic background. For the past ten years, the Château has been cultivating its seedlings. For Cabernet Franc, selections have been made from old, stable vines, some of which were planted in the 1920s and are still bearing fruit today. They have all the qualities needed to create a great wine. To maintain diversity without changing the quality of production, the replanting of the vines is carried out gradually, one hectare for three years to give the land a rest. As a result, the vines express the personality of Cheval Blanc and its terroir. The average age of the vines is over 40 years, naturally ensuring low yields at 35-40 hl/ha. The vineyard has four times as many permanent employees as the winery because great wine is made in the vineyard. Work in the Chateau Cheval Blanc vineyard is carried out all year round, the protection of the vines is always rational, and no herbicides are used. A hedge has recently been planted to recreate and promote biodiversity. Chateau Cheval Blanc has two meteorological stations that provide accurate information and help to anticipate the vagaries of nature.

The 2021 Le Petit Cheval is fabulous. A parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon typically used for the Grand Vin gives the 2021 its core of dark fruit. Heady and explosive in the glass, the 2021 offers up a spellbinding array of dark fruit rose petal, mocha, incense and licorice. All the elements meld together so effortlessly. The 2021 is a dazzling Petit Cheval. That's all there is to it.–Antonio GalloniBarrel Sample: 92-94

Gorgeous intensity of aromas on the nose, blackcurrant, black cherry, cinnamon, all spice - exoticism as well as soft florality. Smooth on the palate, silky, satin-like tannins just coat the mouth so delicately but providing the structure and support for the fruit which is strawberry, red cherry and plum focused with high acidity giving brightens and vibrancy. This needs a little more time to soften and expand but there’s a lovely intensity and precision to this, I love the texture of the fruit and the cooling aspects that abound on the finish. It has a succulence and sense of joy showing the skill of winemaker Pierre-Olivier Clouet. Drinking Window: 2026 - 2036.Barrel Sample: 91

The 2021 Le Petit Cheval is a good second wine that has quality cassis and currant fruits, a kiss of chocolate and earth, medium body, firm yet ripe tannins, and a clean finish. Based on 60% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, this crunchy, vibrant 2021 will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and keep for a good decade or so.
