One of the undeniably outstanding wines of this year is Cheval Blanc 2022, an impressive young wine from Saint-Emilion that reveals in the glass aromas of plum, and cherry, intertwined with nuances of mulberry, tobacco, violet, smoke, licorice, mint, and charcoal. This full-bodied, layered, and fascinating wine is deep and full-bodied, it is intense, with lovely powdery tannins and bright flavors. It finishes with a long, salty aftertaste. In many aspects it can be considered a great representative of the great Château Cheval Blanc. Kudos to Pierre-Olivier Clouet and his team!

Château Cheval Blanc is located in the commune of Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux region, and according to the Official Classification of Saint-Emilion wines, the estate belongs to the Premier Grand Cru Classé "A", i.e. the highest category in the classification. The terroir of Cheval Blanc is unique, composed of a mosaic of clay, sand, and gravel. The geological origin of the soils dates back to the Quaternary period. Cheval Blanc was born from the combination of an exceptional terroir and a blend of two varieties that give the wine its personality. The Château Cheval Blanc vineyard is planted with two varieties: 58% Cabernet Franc and 42% Merlot. Cheval Blanc is one of the few estates whose vineyards have remained unchanged since 1871, and the success of Château Cheval Blanc is due to its genetic background. For the past ten years, the Château has been cultivating its seedlings. For Cabernet Franc, selections have been made from old, stable vines, some of which were planted in the 1920s and are still bearing fruit today. They have all the qualities needed to create a great wine. To maintain diversity without changing the quality of production, the replanting of the vines is carried out gradually, one hectare for three years to give the land a rest. As a result, the vines express the personality of Cheval Blanc and its terroir. The average age of the vines is over 40 years, naturally ensuring low yields at 35-40 hl/ha. The vineyard has four times as many permanent employees as the winery because great wine is made in the vineyard. Work in the Chateau Cheval Blanc vineyard is carried out all year round, the protection of the vines is always rational, and no herbicides are used. A hedge has recently been planted to recreate and promote biodiversity. Chateau Cheval Blanc has two meteorological stations that provide accurate information and help to anticipate the vagaries of nature.

William Kelley:"One of the stars of the vintage is the striking 2022 Cheval Blanc, a blend of 53% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon that bursts from the glass with aromas of mulberries, cherries and wild berries mingled with mint, orange zest, pencil lead, vine smoke and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's rich and gourmand, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, saline, pungently perfumed finish. Harvest began on 29 August, with all the Merlot picked before the month was out, and the result is a wine that is as vibrant as it is lavish".

This is a wine that soars to new heights with its brightness and weightlessness. The balance of serene fruit that’s perfectly ripe. Full-bodied yet tight and polished where it seems delicate and compressed, with berry, chocolate and walnut character. The finish is endless and poised. Wine of the vintage?

The 2022 Cheval Blanc is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Deep, seamless and striking in its beauty, the 2022 possesses pedigree to burn. Readers will find a sumptuous wine, but there’s plenty of tannin lurking beneath all of that intensity. In fact, the 2022 is the most tannic Cheval since 2010. The aromatics are surprisingly vibrant for a wine from a warm, dry year. The wine's energy is palpable. The 100% new oak is not all perceptible, which is another sign of top-notch balance. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of exotic Franc notes, followed by blood orange, red fruit, mind and dried herb touches. The 2022 includes 17% press wine (compared to the 11% or so that is typical), but as I have noted in my comments elsewhere in this report, the press lots were of high quality in 2022 because the winemaking was gentle. Once again, Cheval Blanc represents a pinnacle of excellence. Readers should note there is no Petit Cheval in 2022.–Antonio Galloni
