Le Macchiole is one of the top five wineries in Bolgheri, specializing in the production of red wines based on French grape varieties. The winery’s style is defined by full-bodied, vibrant wines that are capable of aging for decades. The three flagship wines that Le Macchiole is renowned for are Paleo, Scrio, and Messorio—vintages that are often sought after at auctions. Bolgheri Rosso serves as the winery’s entry-level wine, yet it maintains the exceptional quality that characterizes Le Macchiole’s portfolio.
Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2022 has a vivacious character, offering fruity freshness and concentration, with hints of black fruits, pastries, currants, and spices. The wine is full-bodied, with well-defined tannins. On the palate, the fruit base is complemented by notes of Mediterranean herbs. Aging: 10 months, with 70% in third- and fourth-use oak barriques, and 30% in concrete.
The Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2022 underwent fermentation and maceration for about 15 days in steel tanks. It was aged for 10 months, with 70% in third- and fourth-use oak barriques and 30% in concrete. The 2022 growing season began with slightly higher-than-average temperatures and minimal rainfall, which delayed pruning. Spring brought cooler temperatures than usual, and the dry conditions persisted, causing budding to occur much later than normal—almost four weeks behind typical vintages—starting in the first 10 days of April and progressing slowly until significant rainfall arrived in early May. After this, the lack of further rain and a rapid rise in temperatures led to a swift flowering and fruit set, which effectively erased the earlier delays in the budding phase. Veraison occurred early, particularly for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and to some extent for Merlot. The lack of rainfall during the summer affected berry size and caused uneven ripening, making it challenging to determine the ideal harvest time for each variety. This required more frequent sampling and a careful selection of parcels to harvest those with the most consistent ripening. The 2022 harvest will likely be remembered for its duration. It began early, on August 9 with Chardonnay, and concluded almost a month and a half later, on September 22 with Cabernet Sauvignon, thanks to the onset of rain and cooler temperatures starting in mid-August. The rainfall during this period played a crucial role in saving the vintage, resulting in good yields and excellent ripening for all red varieties.
