J. G. Benda

At the heart of Montalcino’s rugged landscape, where muddy tracks wind through dense forest and rocky soils, lies a truly singular story: that of J.G. Benda. Founded by John Gregory Benda and his partner Zoë Johnson, this micro-estate reflects a rare convergence of vision, tenacity, and deep respect for tradition.

John Benda’s journey into wine began far from Tuscany. Born in London and raised in Rome, with Turkish-Italian and British-Italian heritage, he spent his early career in London’s financial sector. It was there, through a friendship with a passionate collector, that he discovered the timeless appeal of the great wines of Burgundy, Piedmont, and Bordeaux. Driven by a growing passion, John left his job and sought hands-on experience, volunteering for harvests at Il Marroneto under the guidance of Alessandro Mori—one of Brunello’s most respected winemakers.

Acquiring land in Montalcino is notoriously difficult. But fate intervened when John came across a quiet foreclosure listing in Rome and unexpectedly secured two hectares of vines—secluded, high-altitude plots surrounded by forest. There is no water or electricity on site. Rainwater is collected with tarps; everything is done by hand. The label reads, “Follow our muddy tracks”—a literal invitation to the rugged terrain and relentless work behind each bottle.

J.G. Benda is guided by organic and biodynamic principles, both in the vineyard and cellar. The vines are trained using the rare capovolto method, encouraging natural balance and heart-shaped symmetry. Fruit is harvested by hand at physiological ripeness, destemmed, and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts. There is no temperature control, no filtration, and minimal sulfur is used. Aging takes place in large Slavonian oak casks; bottling is done directly from barrel, racked only when lunar cycles advise.

With their inaugural 2021 vintage released in 2024, John and Zoë have already garnered attention well beyond their modest scale. The wines, produced in tiny quantities, are intensely site-specific and precise—testament to their unrelenting commitment. While the world of Brunello is dominated by historic estates and deep-pocketed ventures, J.G. Benda offers a refreshing counterpoint: a producer that relies not on legacy or scale, but on raw dedication and deep-rooted authenticity.
