The 1er Cru Les Chenevottes vineyard, located on the eastern slopes of Chassagne-Montrachet, benefits from an ideal microclimate and soil composition. Its proximity to the world-famous Le Montrachet enhances its esteemed reputation, while the vineyard itself is home to vines planted around 80 years ago. The soil, a mix of heavy clay and limestone, is particularly rich and water-retentive, allowing for slower ripening and deeper root development. As a result, the wines exhibit a strong expression of terroir.
Philippe Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes 2021 comes from three barrels, one-third of which is new oak. The aroma is appealing with a combination of lemon sorbet, toasted bread, light accents of cloves and freshly cut grass. The flavour is rich and layered, with lemon zest, cream, vanilla, and pronounced nut and spice accents. The wine's high acidity is perfectly balanced by its full body, while the long dry finish emphasises its complexity. The minimal use of bâtonnage keeps it fresh and precise. In some aspects, it is reminiscent of Meursault.
Les Chenevottes is located on the outskirts of Chassagne-Montrachet, directly opposite the famous grand cru of Le Montrachet. It is a flat vineyard planted with 45 to 80 year old vines on heavy clay soils that retain a lot of water. Like Philippe's other vineyards, it is sustainably farmed with minimal use of chemicals and regular ploughing. The grapes are hand-harvested and the young Les Chenevottes wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of standard and larger French oak barrels. Despite being less well known than other Burgundy winemakers, Philippe Colin wines are made with meticulous attention to detail and from exceptional sites, appealing to connoisseurs of high quality terroir Burgundy.
