Philippe Colin Santenay Clos de Saint-Jean 2021

Vendor code : 1450

Winemaking duties are under Emmanuel Lanier-Garde, as Philippe Colin now spends much of his time in South Africa making wine under the Topiary label. 'We harvested starting on August 26 for around 10 to 11 days,' Lanier-Garde tells me. 'The yields are very good, around 45-55hL/ha. We were a bit afraid of the heat, but the wines turned out to be well-balanced, and I think they will be keepers. We now use only 500-liter barrels during élevage. Most cuvées will be bottled in early 2024.'

The 2021 Santenay Clos de Saint-Jean, sourced from Philippe Colin's wife’s family vineyards, exhibits an earthy, mulch-like aroma that requires some time to fully develop in the glass. There’s a rustic quality to the wine. On the palate, it opens with a slightly peppery sensation, despite being 100% de-stemmed. The wine presents abundant fruit flavors, notably black plum and raspberry, ending with a sappy finish. Overall, it’s a fine expression of Santenay. Collectors who enjoy traditional Burgundian Pinot Noir, especially with less intervention in the winemaking process, will appreciate the purity of the fruit and the wine's earthy authenticity.

Santenay, located at the southernmost tip of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, has its own appellation, established in 1937. The commune predominantly produces red wines from Pinot Noir, though a smaller amount of Chardonnay is also made. While the wines from Santenay do not enjoy the same high reputation as those from its northern neighbors, they are known for being more rustic than refined. This difference is largely due to the local terroir, which has a significant presence of marlstone, similar to the soils found in the nearby Côte Chalonnaise, just a narrow valley away. Santenay lies at the southern end of the limestone ridge known as the Côte d'Or, which is home to some of Burgundy's finest vineyards. Although the prized limestone soils start to thin out just north of Santenay, the commune still boasts several Premier Cru vineyards, mainly concentrated in its northern area near the border with Chassagne-Montrachet. The appellation also includes vineyards in the nearby village of Remigny, which is situated to the east. However, wines from Remigny, located below the limestone slopes, tend to resemble those from northern Côte Chalonnaise appellations like Rully or Mercurey rather than those of the Côte de Beaune. Just west of Santenay are the communes and vineyards of the Maranges appellation. The climate in Santenay is continental, characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, long winters. Unlike other Côte de Beaune communes, Santenay is more exposed to westerly winds due to its location, which is not shielded by the Côte d'Or escarpment. While these winds are rarely severe enough to pose a significant threat, they do increase the risk of damage to the vines, particularly during the flowering season. The Philippe Colin Santenay Clos de Saint-Jean 2021 is a classic representation of Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, specifically from the village of Santenay. Sourced from a walled vineyard named after the neighboring church of Saint-Jean, the vines for this wine are planted in clay-limestone soils, characteristic of the region. These soils provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine's structure and complexity. The vineyard itself is situated in the premier cru area, ensuring a higher quality and expression of terroir. Philippe Colin is known for practicing sustainable viticulture, applying methods that respect the environment while preserving the integrity of the fruit. The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir, a varietal that thrives in the Burgundy region and is carefully vinified to capture the essence of its origin. The wine can be aged for 7 to 10 years, allowing its full character to evolve over time.
