Domaine Carrette Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru Les Crays 2023

Vendor code : 1744

Domaine Carrette is a family estate in Vergisson, at the foot of the limestone peak Roche de Vergisson in southern Burgundy’s Mâconnais. It is managed by third-generation vigneron Hervé Carrette and his wife Nathalie. The vineyards in Vergisson, Davayé, and Solutré are planted mainly to Chardonnay on limestone-rich soils. Wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged 6 to 24 months, depending on the cuvée. The style is precise, fresh, and mineral-driven, from Mâcon-Villages to Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru.

Domaine Carrette's Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru Les Crays comes from one of the region’s newly elevated Premier Cru vineyards, recognized for its limestone-rich soils and excellent exposure. The 2023 vintage delivers a precise and elegant Chardonnay, shaped by its mineral backbone and the domaine’s restrained winemaking style. Aged in a mix of stainless steel and oak, it shows fresh citrus, green apple, and white floral aromas, enriched by linden blossom and hawthorn, with subtle touches of vanilla and cinnamon. The stony finish speaks clearly of its terroir. Ideal for cellaring or pairing with fine seafood, it reflects both purity and structure. Only 4,675 bottles and 320 magnums were produced from a 0.89-hectare plot.

The 2023 vintage of Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Les Crays was shaped by a particularly warm growing season, even hotter than 2022. Spring, early summer, and the first half of September all saw elevated temperatures. Harvest began under intense heat on September 7 and concluded on the 21st in more temperate conditions. Rainfall was regular and sufficient for vine development, though it did bring increased disease pressure. Fortunately, no major weather events affected the vineyard, and the result was a generous, healthy crop with excellent ripeness. The style of the wine closely mirrors 2022, offering a generous and expressive character with low acidity and promising aging potential, especially for the top cuvées. Grapes were hand-picked on September 12 and gently pressed pneumatically. Fermentation began spontaneously using indigenous yeasts in traditional 228-liter Burgundian barrels, 20% of which were new, and 25% used for one or two previous wines. Malolactic fermentation occurred fully and naturally. The wine then matured on full lees for 11 months in barrel, followed by a stainless-steel tank assemblage in late August 2024. It will rest a further five months on fine lees before bottling on January 21, 2025. The vineyard lies within the “Les Crays” climat of Vergisson, on steep, south-facing slopes at 360 to 400 meters altitude. Soils are composed of stony clay and marl, formed by the scree of the Roche de Vergisson. The parcel covers 0.89 hectares, with Chardonnay vines planted between 1990 and 2002. Certified organic, this wine expresses its terroir with purity and precision. It reaches 14% alcohol, with a pH of 3.49, total acidity of 3.2 g/L H₂SO₄, and total sulfites at 113 mg/L.
