Domaine Carrette Pouilly-Fuisse Aux Charmes 2023

Vendor code : 1742

Domaine Carrette is a small, family-run estate in Vergisson, at the foot of the Rock of Solutré, with 16 hectares mainly in Pouilly-Fuissé. Founded in 1980, it’s now run by Hervé Carrette and his wife Nathalie, an oenologist. They farm organically, avoid herbicides, and focus on soil health and biodiversity. Wines are fermented on native yeasts and aged on lees for added complexity. With a mix of hands-on vineyard work and precise cellar care, the domaine produces around 60,000 bottles a year with a strong focus on terroir expression.

Pouilly-Fuissé Aux Charmes 2023 is a new cuvée from Domaine Carrette, introduced in 2022 and produced from a 1.07-hectare vineyard at 300–330 meters altitude on a gentle south-facing slope in Vergisson. The site is rooted in a rare Triassic clay-limestone soil and planted with Chardonnay vines dating from 1950 to 2003. Certified organic, the wine is fermented with native yeasts and crafted in a style that highlights ripe stone fruit, acacia, toasted almond, and brioche. The palate is generous, with aromatic persistence and a fine balance of richness and freshness. A total of 6,258 bottles and 200 magnums were produced.

The 2023 vintage of Pouilly-Fuissé “Aux Charmes” was defined by higher temperatures than the previous year, especially during spring, early summer, and again in the first half of September. Harvest began on September 7 under intense heat and concluded on the 21st in more moderate conditions. Rainfall was consistent and sufficient for vine growth, though it led to increased disease pressure. No adverse weather events affected the vineyard, allowing for a healthy and abundant crop with excellent ripeness. The wine style is similar to 2022: generous and approachable, with low acidity and strong aging potential in the finest cuvées. The grapes were hand-harvested on September 11. Vinification included pneumatic pressing, cold static settling, and spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts — 15% in stainless steel and 85% in traditional 228-liter Burgundian barrels. Of these, 15% were new, and 25% had held one or two previous wines. Malolactic fermentation occurred fully and naturally. The wine matured on full lees in barrel for 11 months, followed by a blending in stainless steel tanks in mid-August 2024. It then remained on fine lees for five additional months before bottling on January 25, 2024. A total of 6,258 bottles and 200 magnums were produced. The vineyard lies within the “Aux Charmes” climat in Vergisson, on gently sloping south-facing plots between 300 and 330 meters in altitude. The soil is shallow Triassic clay — a rare geological feature within the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. The Chardonnay vines span 1.07 hectares and were planted between 1950 and 2003. Certified organic, the wine reflects the unique character of this singular site.
