The Egly-Ouriet style is a jewel-like "Burgundy with bubbles". Champagne House Egly-Ouriet applies the Burgundian approach in Champagne: the vineyard at the center of the formation of a great wine. Fermentation and aging in oak barrels, extra long aging of the wines on lees, up to 10 years. All in all, these are very interesting wines that will be remembered for a lifetime.
It is, without underestimation, an outstanding champagne, a dream of collectors and connoisseurs, which sums up all the best in the Champagne region. Compared to the powerful 2008, this vintage shows more sophistication. Hand-picked grapes, and vinification in barriques using natural yeast. The multi-layered aroma meets with hints of fresh mint, yellow apple, honey, orchards, and spices. Demonstration of the highest IQ in taste. This insightful champagne will be remembered for decades to come.
Egly-Ouriet is one of the best producers in Champagne, hailing from the village of Grand Cru Ambonnay in the commune of Montagne-de-Reims. Egly-Ouriet is one of the few wineries that adheres to biodynamic and organic viticultural principles in Champagne. Egly-Ouriet is a small estate with 9.7 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards: 8 hectares in Ambonnay, small plots of 0.3 hectares in Bouzy, and 1.4 hectares in Verzenay. The vineyards are 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. There is also a small 2-ha plot of Premier Cru with Pinot Meunier near the village of Vrigny. The average age of the vines on all Egly-Ouriet estates is 45 years. The vines are cared for according to organic farming methods. No chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or antifungal sprays are used. At Egly-Ouriet they work at very low yields, the soil is plowed to oxygenate it, and the practice of "green picking" activates the vines and increases the concentration of the remaining berries. This practice has become common in the best vineyards in Burgundy but is extremely rare in Champagne. At Egly-Ouriet, "green picking" in the summer reduces the harvest to half the regional average. This allows for full ripeness of berries and, as a result, a potential wine condition of 12.5-13.5%, which is very impressive for this northern region. Francis Egly is one of the most conscientious and skillful winemakers in the entire region, his expressive Champagne wines are unique and very precise in their expression of terroir. Blanc de Noirs is the first Egly-Ouriet Champagne to be internationally recognized. It is made exclusively from Pinot Noirs harvested from the vineyard known as Les Crayères, which was planted in 1946. The terroir here is exceptional: the topsoil is shallow, up to 30cm high, followed by layers of chalk hundreds of meters deep. The old vines have put down roots very deep, which gives the Egly-Ouriet wine its classic mineral character, extremely powerful and deep. The great concentration is achieved thanks to the good maturity of the grapes, caused by the good exposure of the slope, and the natural ability of the old vines to produce more intense berries.
