Macanita is one of the most interesting wineries in the Douro. They offer a class of wines, especially whites, that could be described as 'fruitless.' For example, Branco As Olgas is a wine with no pronounced aromas or fruit notes. Instead, it presents a stony and earthy profile, with an intellectual and structure-oriented approach. This style of wine is best suited for consumption with food. All wines are produced in very limited volumes (less than 1,000 bottles each), lending them an experimental character. This is winemaking at its highest level of authenticity.
The 2020 Branco As Olgas is a blend sourced from very old vines, aged 90 to 100 years, and includes more than 12 grape varieties. The wine is aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels, resulting in a very dry profile. Like other wines from Macanita, it is stony and earthy with no pronounced fruit notes. It can be described as exciting in structure, with excellent concentration that maintains balance. This wine is perfect for fans of a mineral style, such as Chablis, but offers a unique twist. It is recommended to be enjoyed between 2023 and 2032.
The 2020 'As Olgas' Branco from Macanita is a field blend of 13 varieties. Vinification involves horse plowing, manual harvesting into 18kg boxes, direct pressing of whole bunches, cold decanting, and spontaneous fermentation in barrels with bâtonnage. It is aged for 12 months in neutral French oak barrels. Analyses show SO2 levels below 80 mg/L, adhering to biologic/organic standards (<150 mg/L) and Demeter standards (<90 mg/L). Maçanita is the project of a brother and sister, both winemakers, who explore the varied terroirs of the Douro. The classification system, initiated in 1935 from letter A to F, signifies the quality and right to produce Port wine, with 'Letra A' representing the most mature plots that brought fame to the Douro; plots classified below 'Letra F' lacked such rights and were less regarded. However, there are still forgotten treasures—vines planted in earlier times that confirm the diversity within the Douro. This vineyard is one of those.
