Chassagne–Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chenevottes 2019 Domaine Pierre–Yves Colin–Morey

Vendor code : 417

Not so long ago, it seemed impossible to join the pantheon of great white Burgundy producers. A few names were considered relics whose status supremacy was unattainable. However, a new wave of Burgundy producers, rising in the early 2000s, has stirred up the patriarchal region. Pierre-Yves' first vintages were immediately picked up by experts in the region. Just a few years later, Jancis Robinson put Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey firmly on par with the world-renowned Domaine Coche-Dury, declaring that Burgundy has two impeccable estates creating the perfect white wines. Pierre-Yves has created a modern arrangement of the white Burgundy. And while in the last century, the beauty of Chassagne-Montrachet wines was emphasized by the impeccably executed but bright 'make-up' applied by special winemaking techniques (aging in new oak, malolactic, batonage), Pierre-Yves made the natural minerality of the great terroir evident.

This terroir Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chenevottes concentrates aromas of honey, almond, orange, and pear. On the palate, there is Burgundian elegance, a satiny and layered texture with a gourmand fruity core. This Chassagne-Montrachet feels slightly oakier than the other cuvées. The aftertaste pleasantly surprises with a nutty undertone.

When discussing the history of Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, it is important to mention that the brand initially operated as a negociant. In the early days, Pierre-Yves would provide empty casks to his suppliers, and once they were filled, he would retrieve them. In 2001, he debuted with a modest six casks. Pierre-Yves' initial vintages quickly caught the attention of regional experts, establishing his reputation. Over time, he has gradually expanded his vineyard holdings. As a result, his activities as a negociant have diminished. While he still purchases grapes from certain plots, Pierre-Yves personally cultivates some of these vineyards, such as Bâtard-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and select communal Meursault cuvées. In some instances, even when he doesn't cultivate a particular site, his team harvests the grapes during harvest time, as seen with his Meursault Perrières. It is worth noting that grapes purchased from outside sources are never vinified together with those from his vineyards, ensuring that each cuvée consists solely of one or the other.

Wine Advocate
William Kelley: "Wafting from the glass with scents of orange oil, clear honey and pear, complemented by a subtle top note of petrol, Pierre-Yves Colin's 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes is medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a gourmand core of fruit that's framed by tangy acids and chalky extract. It's a nicely balanced rendition of this early-ripening site".

Decanter
Colin has three parcels in Chenevottes; one is in the centre of the vineyard, planted to 50-year-old vines, another is higher up on the slope and the last is lower down. Although the terroir is not so well-known, it produces marvellous results here, with very pleasant floral and delicate white fruit aromas. Fermented for 16 months in cask (25% new) and a further three months in tank, this has remarkable elegance and finesse. Drinking Window 2021 - 2034.

Burghound
Discreet wood influence sets off the layered aromas of various white-fleshed fruit that is nuanced by hints of citrus peel and quinine. The suave, round and agreeably textured medium weight flavors that possess a more refined mouthfeel if not the same power on the sappy, dry and youthfully austere finale. This balanced effort should drink well young and with mid-term cellaring.
