In our humble opinion, Tomislav Markovic is more than just a winemaker; he is a man who goes beyond the classical understanding of wine. Tomislav does not count himself among the wave of natural wine producers, but he uses a biodynamic approach and fermentation with wild yeast. The style of his wines is clean, with no funk or hint of barnyard. Tomislav's Chardonnay and Pinot Noir offer a cool alternative to the Burgundy style.
The 2021 Riesling Quo Vadis is an interesting and memorable wine. It is clean, fresh, perfectly balanced, detailed, and refined; it is hard to guess blindly that it is a Riesling. The aroma features fresh green apples, willow bark, fresh bread, chamomile, green pear, herbs, and flowers. It is a fine example of a terroir wine.
Tomislav Markovic Winery is located in the German wine region of Baden. It was founded in 2016 by Tomislav Markovic. The first vineyard was acquired in 2019 and planted with Sauvignon Blanc vines from the Loire. In 2021, Touriga Nacional vines were planted, presumably for the first time in Germany. The vineyards consist of 0.5 ha of own vines in Baden, with another 0.5 ha purchased in Rheinhessen. White wines are produced from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling varieties, and red wines from Pinot Noir and Touriga Nacional. The vineyards are cultivated mainly by hand according to the principles of biodynamic viticulture (not certified). Special attention is paid to enhancing biodiversity, soil fertility, and maintaining low yields. Tomislav Markovic's premium wines include two red wines: Pinot Noir 'On the Rocks'—from volcanic soil (open fermentation using the entire contents of the grapes, spontaneous fermentation, unfiltered) and Pinot Noir 'Parabole'—Old Vines—from loess-loamy soil over volcanic rocks (vinified in the same way as 'On the Rocks' but with lower yields), as well as Sauvignon Blanc 'Siefersheimer Heerkretz' white wine—spontaneous fermentation in Slavonian oak, fairly oxidative aging with a long 18-month aging period on lees, unfiltered where possible.
