Chateau Le Crock is one of the best cru bourgeois in Saint-Estephe with a textbook profile of the local terroir.
Richly colored, powerful, concentrated, and full-bodied on the palate, yet distinguished by excellent style and drinkability without losing serious character. Harmony, generosity of fruit, and balance in taste are the result of competent cellar management. With a dominant share of Cabernet Sauvignon, the aroma reveals hints of blackcurrant, plum, and oak.
Chateau Le Crock stands out as a strong contender for offering exceptional value in Bordeaux wines from Saint Estephe and across the entire Medoc appellation. The vineyard, spanning 32.5 hectares, is predominantly planted with 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. The vines are notably old, averaging nearly 40 years in age. Situated between Chateau Cos d’Estournel and Chateau Montrose in Saint Estephe, the vineyards of Le Crock enjoy an eastward view of the Gironde estuary. The terroir here is a blend of deep gravel and clay soil, and the vineyard on the Left Bank boasts a high planting density of 9,000 vines per hectare. Chateau Le Crock produces its wine through a meticulous process that involves vinification in a combination of 8 cement vats and 14 stainless steel tanks. The wine matures in 20% new French oak barrels, with an average aging period of 18 months. The same skilled team that manages the family's other Medoc estates, including Chateau Leoville Poyferre in Saint Julien, is responsible for crafting the wines at Chateau Le Crock. Michel Rolland, a renowned consultant, joined the team in 1994 to further enhance the winemaking process. The best vintages of Chateau Le Crock include 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, and 2003.
