Domaine de Chevalier's recent vintages are stylistically closer to the great wines produced at this address in the 1970s and earlier than to those of the early 2000s. In other words, Domaine de Chevalier has enjoyed a new golden age, resulting in some of Bordeaux's most unusual yet distinctive wines, as the 2022 vintage of Domaine de Chevalier demonstrates.

Domaine de Chevalier Pessac-Leognan Blanc 2022 shows great performance, opening up in the glass with hints of jasmine, citrus, white currant, spring flowers, lemongrass and beeswax. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it is concentrated and structured, with terrific depth at the core, energetic acids and a long, salty finish. The Domaine de Chevalier Pessac-Leognan Blanc 2022 is a compelling wine with considerable complexity and ageing potential.

A significant natural advantage of Domaine de Chevalier lies in the perennial harmony between the vineyard and the surrounding forest. Sheltered by an extensive forest and unaffected by external influences, the Domaine de Chevalier vineyard has a microclimate and a diverse ecosystem that synergistically contributes to a high-quality environment. The commitment to extend organic and biodynamic farming practices to all vineyards managed by Domaine de Chevalier, launched in 2021, is a milestone on a path laid out in 2010. This transformation, the result of long reflection and gradual implementation, means inexorable progress toward obtaining organic certification for all production by 2023. The Domaine de Chevalier vineyards are located on hilly slopes of white stones brought to the area from the Pyrenees by glaciers during several ice ages over millions of years. The gravel layer is mixed with black sand, a rarity in Bordeaux. In addition to unique soils, high planting density and low yields are also necessary to create great wines, which Domaine de Chevalier adheres to. The optimum planting density for this terroir is 10,000 vines. This density creates competition between plants, resulting in low yields of grapes with thin skins and a high concentration of color, aroma, and tannins. The harvest involves a team that remains unchanged over the years, with the same pickers working in each plot year after year. They have to walk five times along the rows to pick the ripest berries, which undoubtedly affects the high quality of Domaine de Chevalier.

Yohan Castaing:"The 2022 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc offers up aromas of pear, nectarine, crushed mint jasmine and lemon, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate with a mineral-driven profile. It's lively and bright, with a delicate, penetrating finish animated by racy acids. This blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon, matured entirely in large wooden foudres and 500-liter barrels instead of the traditional barriques, is one of the finest white wines of the vintage, and one of the few that transcends its limitations. A deep and layered white with rich and intense structure. It’s full yet agile with so much energy and intensity. Cooked apple, lime zest and nougat with oyster and sea bed undertones. Fascinating already.Barrel Sample: 98-99

The 2022 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc brings more dimensions and layers, as well as richness. Based on 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon, aging in 40% new oak, it has a beautiful perfume of honeyed citrus, subtle tropical flowers, and chalky, minerality nuances. This carries to a medium to full-bodied white with plenty of density and depth, nicely integrated acidity, and a gorgeous finish. I wouldn't be surprised to see this end up in the top handful of whites in the vintage.Barrel Sample: 95-97+
