Clos de Lambre is one of the five Grand Cru vineyards located in the village of Moret-Saint-Denis. This historic vineyard is almost a monopoly. The aroma combines hints of blackberry, wild berries, and briary with exotic spices, graphite, and loamy soil. Full-bodied, deep and layered, rich and concentrated (reflecting a classic style), with powdery tannins, lively acids, and a long, marine-influenced, resonant finish.
Domaine des Lambrays, located in the town of Morey-Saint-Denis on the Route des Grandes Vins, is one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Burgundy. The grapes for Domaine des Lambrays wines are grown on a narrow plot of land of less than nine hectares, where there were vineyards already at the time of Charlemagne and the Dukes of Burgundy. The clay-lime soil of the Cote de Nuits region contributes to the fact that one of the world's best Pinot Noirs is grown here. In 2019, Domaine des Lambrays began transitioning to organic production and in 2020 to biodynamic production, vinification plot by plot began to be applied, dividing them according to geology. Domaine des Lambrays' ambition seems to be to farm on a vine-by-vine basis, controlling yields much more closely, especially when it comes to young vines. The smart and thoughtful new head winemaker, Jacques Desvauges, is full of energy and enthusiasm and is ready to keep implementing new methods, and with LVMH's resources behind him, the deck is stacked in his favor. Anyone who has tasted the wines produced in the best days of Clos des Lambrays knows that the place is one of Burgundy's greatest and most distinctive terroirs. The 2014 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak and is 100% whole bunch fruit. It is blessed with a winsome bouquet. As usual, there is something very natural, unimposing and refined on the nose: blackberry and briary, a hint of graphite, a subtle leafiness maybe, and yet delineated and very pure. The palate is lively and energetic with crisp tannin, black rather than red fruit, linear and very classic in style with what you might call a "cool" marine-influenced finish that has fine salinity. What a great Clos des Lambrays that will put a smile on the face of those that adore refined Burgundy. Thierry Brouin has one year remaining as winemaker at Domaine de Lambrays and then a contractual two years as a consultant. "I'll be 70 by then," he told me with a Gallic shrug of the shoulders. "It's time for new blood." What with Sylvain Pitiot's retirement from Clos des Tart, it appears that a chapter in Morey-Saint-Denis is closing and a new one will be opening. The question is: will the next chapter be as good a read as the last? I hope so.
Burghound
A notably spicy, fresh, cool and floral nose displays mostly red berry fruit scents that are trimmed in discreet wood notes. There is excellent cut and definition to the nicely rich and attractively textured flavors that culminate in a presently austere finale though I doubt that austerity will persist. This is a relatively fine and forward vintage for Clos des Lambrays and one that should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age.
Vinous
Dark red-ruby. Liqueur-like cherry and raspberry on the nose, complicated and lifted by smoky minerality. Pliant, suave and sweet, displaying lovely volume and complex saline soil tones. The stem element here gives this wine good inner-mouth lift. Finishes supple and long, with sneaky energy.
