Romain Taupenot, a proponent of organic farming methods, is behind the rise of Taupenot-Merme in recent years. It's almost as if fashion has caught up with them: traditionally, they have been forging their own path toward leaner, terroir-focused wines that were equally concerned with texture and fruit, and now many producers have returned to this style. The domaine produces wine from several key Grand and Premier Cru vineyards, including Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyeres-Chambertin, as well as La Riotte Premier Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis. Taupenot-Merme also owns a small portion of the Clos des Lambrays vineyards.
The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte is created on a 0.56-hectare plot in the ‘La Riotte’ Premier Cru vineyard in the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation. The vines grow on shallow limestone soils with a fairly high marl content and good drainage. The average age of the vines is 64 years. Fresh strawberry-orange sorbet and stemmy tones compete with darker flavors of black cherry and plum. The wine is full of interesting stuffing and energy just waiting to burst out in the form of complexity and concentration, with a poise and tension combined with immediacy that will make it an excellent pairing at the dinner table.
The history of Domaine Taupenot-Merme dates back to the 18th century. Over the past few years, the winery has earned the unspoken title of one of the rising stars among Burgundy's winemakers and is counted among the fastest-growing businesses in Morey-Saint-Denis. Today, the company is run by Romain Taupenot, a seventh-generation member of the family, along with his sister Virginie. Romain is undoubtedly a perfectionist by nature, so he always strives to achieve the highest results, and this is reflected in the quality of the wines he creates. While Romain is involved in the creation of wines from the planting of the vines to the aging of the wine in the cellar, Virginie is busy with sales and exports. Romain is committed to organic farming methods, and it is important to him to grow clean and healthy berries that skilfully reflect the terroir. The total area of Domaine Taupenot-Merme's vineyards, located in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, is 13 hectares, which is quite large by the standards of Burgundy. The farm pays a lot of attention to the condition of the vines: pruning is carried out and the yield is regulated. The vines are harvested only by hand. The average age of the vines is 50 years. The aging of the wine in oak is handled very carefully in the winery so that the ‘woody’ tones do not dominate. Usually, the percentage of new barrels is around 25% during aging, and 40% for Grand and Premier Cru wines. All wines from Domaine Taupenot-Merme are characterized by purity, expression, and great elegance.
