Arnaud Mortet is making better wines than ever before. As with the previous 10 vintages, Burgundy hedonists will be deeply impressed by the potential of Mortet's wines. Each cuvée exudes a sense of vibrancy and energy, thanks to the judicious use of both whole bunches and new oak, which allows each vineyard to showcase its unique character.
The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2020 from Domaine Denis Mortet is a rich, masculine wine, offering flavors of black fruit and spices, with excellent freshness and a long, slightly chalky finish. While this wine is charming in its youth, it will fully reveal its potential after some time in the cellar. The plot is located in the center of the slope in the village of Chambolle-Musigny. The soil is pebbly and very chalky, with white earth lying atop pure silt. The average age of the vines is 70 years, and the average production is 800 bottles. Fermentation is carried out using only natural yeasts. The wine is matured for 18 months in oak barrels, with 80% in new barrels and 20% in once-used barrels.
The wines from Arnaud Mortet are undeniably beautiful. They possess a distinctive softness that makes them enjoyable to drink when young, yet they also have the concentration and satiny structure needed to age gracefully. Their stability is equally impressive. If Mortet continues to uphold the meticulous attention to detail in viticulture that was his father's hallmark, especially against the backdrop of an expanding palette of appellations, this domaine's position among the greats of the Côte de Nuits will be unassailable. Mortet's vineyards are a true work of art, with each vine meticulously tended by hand, removing any damaged leaves. Everyone who knows Arnaud is well aware that he is a perfectionist by nature, driven by a desire to honor his father's legacy. He has made an excellent start, and the further development of Domaine Denis Mortet will certainly be fascinating to watch—and taste!
