Champagne Jacques Selosse Lieux-dits 'Les Carelles' Le Mesnil Sur Oger Grand Cru Extra Brut

Vendor code : 1293

Anselme Selosse, one of the key figures in a generation that transformed Champagne, has now passed the reins to his son, Guillaume, who skillfully manages this iconic estate in Avize. Jacques Selosse produces 57,000 bottles of Champagne annually, using grapes grown on 7.5 hectares of vineyards. These vineyards are primarily Chardonnay plots located in the Côte des Blancs—Avize, Cramant, Oger, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger—and a few Pinot Noir plots in the Montagne de Reims, specifically in Aÿ, Ambonnay, and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.

Les Carelles Le Mesnil Sur Oger Grand Cru Extra Brut reveals deep layers of ripe pears, dried apricots, spices, flowers, hazelnuts, confectionery, smoke, and honey, all woven into a rich tapestry of elegance and unique class. This release of Les Carelles showcases a wealth of nuance and character. While Carelles stands apart from Selosse’s wines from Avize, it is the spirit of Selosse, rather than the essence of Mesnil's terroir, that shines through most prominently. The pure mineral notes on the finish are a hallmark of Mesnil’s terroir. This is a fascinating wine, especially if allowed time to open up in the glass.

Jacques Selosse is one of the most renowned estates in Champagne, producing wines that are essential for even the most discerning Champagne enthusiasts. Founded by Jacques Selosse in 1949 in the prestigious Côte des Blancs, the prime region for Chardonnay, the estate has been under the direction of his son, Anselme Selosse, since 1980. Anselme, an unconventional and charismatic figure, has become a true icon in the wine world. Trained in Beaune, Burgundy, he was one of the first to bring Burgundian vinification techniques to Champagne. Chardonnay from the estate’s 35 small plots in Avize, Cramant, Oger, Le Mesnil, Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay, and Ambonnay is fermented separately in small Burgundy barrels sourced from Domaine Leflaive. In 1994, Anselme was named France’s best winemaker by the French magazine Gault & Millau.
