Perhaps no winemaker working with Nebbiolo has become more influential in the Barolo and Barbaresco regions than Bruno Giacosa. This legendary winemaker had an extraordinary, deeply intuitive, and intellectual ability to select the finest sites for growing Nebbiolo grapes. His intimate knowledge of the hills and sun-drenched peaks of the Langhe opened a new chapter in the history of Italy's most prestigious wine regions.
Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto 2019 (white label) is yet another extraordinary wine from a classic vintage. The Serralunga d'Alba fruit is full, generous, and layered, showcasing the pedigree expected from a fine Nebbiolo. This wine offers remarkable density, power, and grace, yet it feels weightless and delicate, warming the senses smoothly. Crunchy cherry and blackberry flavors are complemented by subtle hints of crushed stone and iron ore. Bright tones of roasted grass and blue flowers gently rise from the bouquet, adding a balanced intensity to this highly collectible vintage.
Bruno Giacosa was one of the first to fully recognize the enormous winemaking potential of the crus. In Barbaresco, he sourced fruit from Neive (Gallina and Basarin) and other areas. Ironically, for much of this time, he didn’t own a single hectare of vineyards. In 1964, he was the first to produce a single-vineyard wine, Santo Stefano (in Neive, Barbaresco). When he finally decided to purchase his first plot, he chose Falletto in Serralunga d'Alba (in the Barolo appellation), which he considered ideal for achieving both elegance and power. In 2019, Bruno Giacosa produced Barbarescos Rabajà and Asili, as well as the Barolo Falletto Vigna Le Rocche (white label). However, the red Barolo Riserva Falletto Vigna Le Rocche was not produced that year. This Riserva was made in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017, but not in 2013, 2015, 2018, or 2019. The Riserva will be produced in 2020 and 2022.
