Charles Van Canneyt said that the grape harvest took place from September 3 to 7: ‘It was quite fast because we hired a lot of pickers. All the stems were removed. In 2021, we had 90 barrels, and in 2022, we had 213 barrels.’ Among the 2022 barrels, there is one exceptional wine that truly stands out, and it’s not Richebourg or Romanée-Saint-Vivant, as good as they are. It is Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts, which elicits an enthusiastic ‘wow’. Overall, the 2022 wines from Domaine Hudelot Noellat form a very interesting set, each expressing its terroir beautifully.

Domaine Hudelot Noellat Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 2022 comes from a 0.68-hectare plot. Production totals 4,000 bottles. The wine was aged for 16 months in oak barrels, 30% of which were new. Hand-harvested grapes, wild yeast fermentation, and small production create a fine example of top Pinot Noir. The Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 2022 opens with notes of flowers, white pepper, raspberry, and plum. On the palate, the wine is delicate, with soft tannins and light acidity. Enjoy it, as after 2022, two-thirds of the plot will be replanted with new vines.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers is a renowned vineyard in the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, located within the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. Positioned between the villages of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée, it sits at the heart of one of the world's most prestigious wine regions. Like most Premier Cru plots in Burgundy, Les Murgers is relatively small, though its exact size can vary by producer. The name 'Les Murgers' is derived from the term 'murgers,' meaning stone walls or piles of stones, which reflects the vineyard's stony soil. This soil, a mix of limestone and clay, is rich in small pebbles, promoting excellent drainage—ideal for growing Pinot Noir. The vineyard's gentle slopes, typical of the Côte d'Or, provide optimal sunlight exposure and drainage, aiding in the balanced ripening of the grapes. Wines from Les Murgers are known for their power and structure, often fuller-bodied than those from more northern parts of the Côte de Nuits. These wines generally benefit from extended aging, improving over 10 to 15 years as their tannins soften and complex secondary flavors, such as forest floor and dried fruits, emerge. Top-tier producers of Les Murgers include Domaine Hudelot Noellat, Domaine Méo-Camuzet, and Domaine Bertagna.

A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. Enjoy it because two thirds of the plot on 161/49 rootstock was taken out after the 2022 harvest. Drink from 2032-2040.

From 0.68 ha holding. A more deeply pitched nose freely offers up its aromas of plum, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The delicious and vibrant, if not especially dense, medium weight flavors possess good punch and focused power on the mildly austere, compact and built-to-age finale. This should age gracefully over a 12 to 15 year window and hold for another decade thereafter.

The 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers unfurls in the glass with aromas of plums, peonies, spices and smoked duck. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with an almost unctuous core of fruit, melting tannins and lovely purity of fruit, it's a real success.
