Charles Van Canneyt has released an impressive series of 2022 wines. Romanee-Saint-Vivant is one of the prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in the Vosne-Romanee appellation, surrounded by other famous Grand Cru sites, including Romanee-Conti to the west and Les Richebourg to the north. While Romanee-Saint-Vivant may not have the same immediate recognition as Romanee-Conti, it is regarded as one of Burgundy’s most refined and aromatic Grand Cru vineyards, producing wines that beautifully express the unique terroir of Vosne-Romanee.
Domaine Hudelot Noëllat Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2022 comes from a 0.48-hectare plot, with a production of 2,400 bottles. The vines are 95 years old. The wine was aged for 16 months in oak barrels, 30% of which were new. Hand-harvested grapes, wild yeast fermentation, and small-scale production create a fine example of top Pinot Noir. The Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2022 showcases all the finesse and complexity of Burgundy Pinot Noir, with an aromatic profile featuring sweet spices, red fruit, earthiness, blackberry, and plum, framed by a skillful application of new oak. The wine’s flavor is clean and powerful, sensual yet direct.
Romanee-Saint-Vivant spans 9.4 hectares, making it the largest Grand Cru in the village of Vosne-Romanée. The vineyard exclusively produces Pinot Noir wines celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and longevity. Located on the lower slopes of the Cote d'Or escarpment near Vosne-Romanee, Romanee-Saint-Vivant is known for its limestone-rich soils, with a mixture of clay and gravel, which provide excellent drainage and contribute to the refined structure of its wines. This terroir, combined with the ideal mid-slope positioning, results in wines with delicate tannins and pronounced aromatic complexity. One of the most notable producers is Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC), which owns more than half of the vineyard (5.28 hectares). DRC’s Romanee-Saint-Vivant is renowned for its ethereal, delicate style, making it one of the estate's most sought-after wines. Other significant producers include Domaine Leroy, Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron, and Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat, all of which have smaller holdings in this vineyard but produce exceptional examples of this Grand Cru. Though it may not have the same immediate recognition as Romanee-Conti, Romanée-Saint-Vivant is considered one of Burgundy’s most refined and aromatic Grand Cru vineyards, beautifully expressing the terroir of Vosne-Romanee.
