Bernhard Huber is the godfather of German Pinot Noir. According to the World of Fine Wine, it is one of the most important wine producers in Germany in the last 20 years.
Today the winery is run by Bernhard's son, Julian Huber, together with the same winemaking team as under his father.
Bernhard Huber was known for powerful and intense wines that nevertheless possessed finesse, although in his youth they were often overshadowed by a certain opulence.
Julian's focus is entirely on finesse and freshness, with his wines having enough potential to mature over the years. As a result, all the hedonistic qualities of the wines are in place.
The realization of this came to Julian only gradually - as it did to his generation, who often went overboard in favor of finesse, reduction, and freshness, to the detriment of generosity and depth.
In recent years, the proportion of whole grapes has increased slightly (from 10% to 15%) and the wines are again slightly reminiscent of his father's old, timeless style, but they are more refined. A prime example of this is the Sommerhalde 2021 wine, which symbolizes a quantum leap.
Not only Sommerhalde, but all of Julian's pinot noirs are pure but dense and juicy, and thanks to ripe, very fine tannins and minerality, structured and long-lasting in intensity.
Julian Huber is also responsible for a significant change in the style of chardonnay, which was typically broad and sprawling. ‘By no means with a yellow fruit aroma’, Julian emphasizes.
He's a big fan of smoky, silky, supple white wine, and this comes through in his recent wines.
Julian is also a fan of Burgundy wines from Domaine Roulot and appreciates the ‘wildness and structure’ of Coche-Dury wines. Julian has a very fine sense of wine and with the accumulation of experience, he will continue to push the already prestigious domaine forward.
He seems to have a talent as good as his father's, as well as a tireless desire to refine the philosophy he has already conquered. Fans of hedonistic Pinot Noir are warmly recommended to try wines from Bernhard Huber.
