Domaine Rostaing

René Rostaing’s story is tightly woven into the revival of Côte-Rôtie in the late 20th century — a moment when this once-forgotten slope found its voice again. His first vintage was 1971, but it wasn’t until the 1990s that the wines began to get the attention they deserved, just as the region itself started to rise from obscurity. The domaine was small at first, but with inheritance from his uncle Albert Dervieux and father-in-law Marius Gentaz — both local legends — Rostaing gained access to some of Côte-Rôtie’s most respected old vines.

The heart of the domaine is in the northern sector, especially in lieux-dits like La Landonne, Côte Blonde, and Viallière. These vineyards have different expressions: the schist-rich La Landonne gives structure and depth, while the lighter soils of Côte Blonde lean toward elegance and perfume. Rostaing always kept a foot in both camps, blending them when appropriate, but also bottling them separately when the character was distinct enough. The result: wines that could be dense and brooding or lifted and aromatic — but always precise.

One of the defining traits of Rostaing’s approach is his balance between tradition and control. He embraced whole cluster fermentation when the stems were ripe, avoided excessive extraction, and used oak sparingly — rarely more than 10–15% new. His wines are never showy. They can seem a bit quiet in youth, but they age with grace, unfolding over time rather than making a quick impression.

Since 2015, the domaine has been under the care of his son Pierre, who trained in Burgundy and brings a thoughtful, detail-driven energy to the cellar. The style has remained consistent, but there’s an even sharper focus on precision and definition. Volumes have increased a little, but not at the expense of identity.

There’s also Condrieu and a bit of Languedoc in the mix — a reflection of both tradition and diversification — but the soul of the domaine remains Côte-Rôtie. In a region where power can sometimes overwhelm finesse, Rostaing’s wines always seem to find the right line.
