Champagne Marc Hébrart

A terroir-driven house from the Vallée de la Marne.

Champagne Marc Hébrart, a family-owned estate based in the heart of the Vallée de la Marne, commands the attention of champagne connoisseurs around the world. Established in 1964 and currently helmed by Jean-Paul Hébrart, the domaine has gained a stellar reputation for crafting terroir-driven champagnes that celebrate the unique characteristics of its premier and grand cru vineyards.

The estate encompasses 15.5 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards, including 5 hectares classified as Grand Cru. These are spread across 75 distinct parcels located in some of Champagne’s most prestigious villages: Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Aÿ, Avize, Oiry, and Chouilly. Each parcel is vinified separately, a labor-intensive process that ensures each wine retains its own identity, reflecting the diversity of the terroir.

Marc Hébrart’s vineyards are primarily planted with Pinot Noir (70%) and Chardonnay (30%), yielding about 140,000 bottles annually. The house takes great care in managing its vineyards, with a strong commitment to sustainability. Jean-Paul Hébrart, a dedicated steward of the land, believes Pinot Noir demands special attention, particularly in terms of yield control. If overproduced, the wine risks becoming thin and lacking in character. By contrast, Chardonnay flourishes in certain parcels, most notably in the 1-hectare Clos le Léon vineyard, where the unique combination of clay, sand, and chalk soils contributes to the exceptional quality of the fruit.

At Champagne Marc Hébrart, vinification is both an art and a science. Malolactic fermentation is deliberately blocked in all but two wines: the Coteaux Champenois and the Rive Gauche – Rive Droite cuvée. The latter is a "Burgundian" style champagne, composed of Chardonnay from Chouilly and Avize, and Pinot Noir from Aÿ, vinified in small old oak barrels using wild yeasts. This meticulous process imbues the wine with remarkable complexity and depth, setting it apart from more conventional styles.

While steel tanks and malolactic fermentation are common practices for many of the house’s wines, oak barrels are selectively employed for certain cuvées to enhance texture and add layers of flavor. The Rive Gauche – Rive Droite Grand Cru Millesime is a prime example, offering a bold expression of Champagne’s potential.

Though Champagne Marc Hébrart is known for its artisanal approach, the estate is also celebrated for delivering excellent value, particularly with its Brut Sélection. This cuvée stands out for its excellent quality-to-price ratio, making it a favorite among wine lovers seeking a distinctive Champagne that isn’t overpriced.

The house’s signature cuvées, including Blanc de Blancs and Special Club, showcase a harmonious balance of freshness, complexity, and aging potential. The entire range exemplifies Marc Hébrart’s commitment to craftsmanship, with each bottle reflecting the distinctive characteristics of its origin.
