Scyfion is the most renowned bottler of rare single cask whiskies in Ukraine. "Everything always starts with the right cask," claims the Scyfion team. Scyfion stands out from the crowd due to its innovative approach and extensive network of contacts. They use some rather unexpected wine barrels, with one of their goals being to focus on local barrels, although this is not always their primary focus.
Scyfion is a Ukrainian bottler with a clear philosophy: the cask creates the whisky. As you know, casks shape a whisky’s profile by infusing it with unique characteristics, but finishing in such casks can be like walking on thin ice. One of the defining traits of Dufftown’s profile is its 45-month finish in oak Armagnac casks. Dufftown 2008 Armagnac Cask offers honeyed sweetness, with fruity and floral notes, complemented by vanilla, saffron, candied fruits, and subtle hints of oak. Bottled in 2024, this limited release consists of only 150 bottles, with a strength of 54.7%.
Dufftown Distillery was established in 1895, with production beginning a year later. Located near the town of the same name and close to the confluence of the Dullan and Fiddich Rivers, the distillery sources its water from Jock's Well in the Conval Hills. In 1933, Dufftown was purchased by Arthur Bell and Sons from its original owners for £56,000. Following the acquisition of Arthur Bell and Sons by Guinness and the subsequent merger of Guinness with Grand Metropolitan, Dufftown is now owned by Diageo. In 1979, two additional stills were added, bringing the total number of stills at Dufftown to eight. Today, Dufftown is the largest producer in Diageo’s operations, with a production capacity of around 4.12 million litres per year. Up to 98% of this volume is used in blends such as Johnnie Walker, Dewar's, and Bells, where Dufftown serves as the primary malt whisky. Officially, there is only one domestic release, the Flora and Fauna 15-year-old. However, a 12-year-old whisky, the Singleton of Dufftown, has been released for the duty-free market. Only a few independent bottlings of Dufftown have been made available.
