Le Macchiole's Messorio is one of Tuscany's most prestigious wines, and deservedly so. Over the years, it has built an impressive reputation for its remarkable ability to evolve in the bottle, giving this Bolgheri Merlot a unique character and profound depth. Older vintages reach astonishing heights as they mature. The 2019 Messorio is expected to continue improving through 2048.
The 2019 Messorio is a dark, assertive wine with layered notes of black plum, blackberry, incense, cassis, juniper berries, black cherry, and rhubarb. In the background, there’s a secondary complexity with hints of graphite and pressed blueberries. This wine boasts a full body, velvety tannins, and a truly agile, dynamic finish. Cinzia Merli notes that Merlot, as an early-ripening grape variety, is particularly sensitive to climate change. However, the Le Macchiole team works diligently to achieve balance and elegance. Their focus on preserving the surrounding forests not only supports biodiversity but also serves a practical purpose, as these "green lungs" contribute to the health of the grapes.
Messorio 2019 underwent fermentation and maceration for 25 days in concrete vats. The aging process involved 18 months in new oak barrels, and bottling took place on August 10, 2021. Messorio 2019 is a vintage defined by a slow, extended ripening period with no extreme heat spikes. The early part of the year saw a winter with typical seasonal temperatures, low rainfall, and a predominantly dry climate, except for a slight increase in humidity towards the last week of January, which hindered green manure development. The spring brought fluctuating weather, with a particularly cold climate in the last two weeks of March, followed by a steady rise in temperatures throughout April, promoting slow and gradual sprout growth. In May, cooler temperatures and significantly higher rainfall slowed the vegetative progress of the vines. By early June, a hot and dry spell, coupled with the abundant rains of May, triggered vigorous shoot growth on the plants. This led to clusters requiring targeted green management interventions throughout the summer. The harvest season for Messorio began slightly later than usual, starting with white grapes in the fourth week of August. Messorio's Merlot grapes were harvested between the first and third week of September, along with Syrah, while the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties were picked between the fourth week of September and the first ten days of October. Messorio 2019 showcases a unique growing season, with meticulous care taken throughout each stage.
