Domaine du Clos des Fees Un Faune avec son Fifre 2020

Vendor code : 1704

Hervé Bizeul isn’t your typical winemaker. Ex-sommelier, ex-journalist, and now the driving force behind Domaine du Clos des Fées, he’s one of Roussillon’s most talked-about names — not because he follows tradition, but because he doesn’t. Bizeul set out to prove that this rugged corner of southern France can produce reds that stand toe-to-toe with the greats of the world. What does make his wines stand out? Precision, vision, and a refusal to compromise. He still holds back small batches of older vintages for private clients and restaurants — proof that these wines aren’t just bold when young, but built to last.

This isn’t your average Cabernet Franc. Un Faune avec son Fifre 2020 is a bold, character-driven blend — mostly Cab Franc from super-densely planted vines (6,800/ha), with a dash of Merlot and Cab Sauv for extra depth. It’s all about juicy red and black fruit, wild herbs, a touch of truffle and leather, and that cool crushed-stone edge that keeps it grounded. Medium to full-bodied, smooth but energetic, it’s got serious presence without being heavy. You can pop it now for all that ripe, pure fruit — or stash it for 10 years if you’ve got patience. A real gem from Roussillon with its own rhythm.

Un Faune avec son Fifre 2020 from Domaine du Clos des Fées is a striking expression of Cabernet Franc grown on north-facing limestone terraces, planted at high density (6,800 vines/ha) using massal selection and bush pruning on individual stakes. Each vine is positioned to shield its neighbor from direct sunlight, preserving natural acidity and aromatic purity. Merlot, sourced from the densely planted “Clos des Fées” parcel, adds flesh and depth. Harvested at full phenolic ripeness, the grapes undergo a gentle vinification with punching down and open pumping over in temperature-controlled vats. Aging is partly in new oak barrels, then in tank, with early bottling (May/June) to retain vibrancy and detail.
