In 1994, Jean-Marie Fourrier faced a difficult choice. He inherited Domaine Fourrier at a critical moment: the estate's reputation had been virtually destroyed by Robert Parker's scathing reviews, and wine sales had come to a standstill. Jean-Marie himself had never dreamed of a career as a winemaker — he was drawn instead to aviation and the pilot’s seat. But his sense of duty to his family proved stronger, and he decided not to sell the property. Even during the period of complete decline, he understood that the estate’s greatest asset was its old vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, from which it was entirely possible to begin a new chapter in its history.
The priceless collection of old Pinot Noir clones shaped the distinctive style of the estate’s wines. Another advantage was the experience Jean-Marie gained from legendary mentor Henri Jayer. His advice encouraged Jean-Marie to minimise intervention in the winemaking process. Over the next two decades, Domaine Fourrier was transformed from an outsider into one of the most sought-after names in Burgundy, and its wines have become rare and coveted ‘superstars.’
Clos Saint-Jacques deserves special mention — the finest Premier Cru of Gevrey-Chambertin, often compared to the great Grands Crus. Although this vineyard is located slightly apart from the commune’s top sites, its wines are comparable in quality to the most prestigious, while remaining more affordable. The name of the vineyard is linked to Saint James, one of the twelve apostles, whose statue once served as a landmark for pilgrims.
