Macanita is one of the most interesting wineries in the Douro. They offer a class of wines, especially whites, that could be described as 'fruitless.' For example, Branco As Olgas is a wine with no pronounced aromas or fruit notes. Instead, it presents a stony and earthy profile, with an intellectual and structure-oriented approach. This style of wine is best suited for consumption with food. All wines are produced in very limited volumes (less than 1,000 bottles each), lending them an experimental character. This is winemaking at its highest level of authenticity.
The 2020 Fitapreta Chão dos Eremitas Os Paulistas combines power, complexity, texture, and depth. The wine is restrained yet excels in every aspect. It should age well and develop consistently. The aroma reveals hints of plum, strawberry, and herbs. The blend includes the varieties Tinta Carvalha, Castelão, Moreto, Alfrocheiro, and Trincadeira. It is recommended to be enjoyed between 2023 and 2035.
The vineyard 'Chão dos Eremitas' operates under certified sustainable farming (Produção Integrada) and participates in the sustainable program run by the Alentejo Commission (CVRA). 'Os Paulistas' references the Eremite monks of the Order of St. Paul who farmed lands in the southern foothills of Serra d’Ossa. The Fitapreta Chão dos Eremitas Os Paulistas 2020 was produced in a limited run of 4,999 numbered 0.75L bottles, released in March 2023. Winemaking involves a manual night harvest, selection on a sorting table, 30% whole bunch and 70% destemmed grapes falling by gravity into the vat. Spontaneous fermentation and maceration last between 25 to 40 days, followed by 18 months of aging in three-year-old French oak barrels. The wine has an SO2 level under 50 ppm.
