Macanita is one of the most interesting wineries in the Douro. They offer a class of wines, especially whites, that could be described as 'fruitless.' For example, Branco As Olgas is a wine with no pronounced aromas or fruit notes. Instead, it presents a stony and earthy profile, with an intellectual and structure-oriented approach. This style of wine is best suited for consumption with food. All wines are produced in very limited volumes (less than 1,000 bottles each), lending them an experimental character. This is winemaking at its highest level of authenticity.
The 2020 Reserva Branco is predominantly made from Arinto grapes, complemented by 35% from old vine grapes harvested in a field blend. The wine is aged for 12 months, with 60% of the volume matured in used French oak barrels and 40% in stainless steel. With an alcohol level of 13.4%, this wine delivers a pleasantly full-bodied flavor and moderate intensity. Its well-balanced character makes it an ideal accompaniment to food. Expect an abundance of mineral tones, nuances of sea salt, and bright, lively acidity. It is recommended to be enjoyed between 2022 and 2030.
Maçanita has emerged as one of the most intriguing producers in the Douro, led by the sibling team of Joana and Antonio Maçanita. Despite their success, there’s a quirky element to their operation. They've actively sought out old vines and unconventional grapes, resulting in a distinctive class of wines—particularly the whites—which Joana describes as 'no fruit' wines. An example is Branco As Olgas, characterized not by fruitiness but by a stony, earthy quality that leans towards the intellectual and emphasizes structure. Another example, Os Canivéis, exhibits grapes that, in Joana’s words, have 'no wish for fruit expression,' possibly replacing typical flavors with petrichor or minerality. This style necessitates pairing with food. Occasionally, these wines can appear charmless, yet they seem capable of aging, suggesting potential for development over time. Often produced in very limited quantities (under 1,000 bottles), there's an experimental vibe to them. However, Maçanita offers more than just these niche creations. There are thrillingly innovative styles here too, like the flavorful, structured red version of As Olgas and the Touriga duo from different terroirs. Moreover, more traditional whites like the regular Branco, the Verdehlo, and the Gouveio also showcase their versatility.
