Domaine Armand Heitz Corton Grand Cru Hautes Mourottes 2020

Vendor code : 518

At around 360 meters, the Corton “Hautes Mourottes” vineyard is the highest Grand Cru on the Corton hill. Facing east, it benefits from a relatively cool climate with significant temperature variations. The soil consists of brown limestone over a Bathonian-era subsoil, offering excellent drainage. Although the land is warm, it is also infertile, which stresses the vines during their growth and the ripening of the grapes. This, combined with the unique microclimate, results in the Corton “Les Hautes Mourottes” wine being relatively austere and firm in its youth. The vines are approximately 45 years old.

Armand Heitz on the appellation: "Nowadays, the site is mostly planted with Chardonnay, but we are fortunate to still have old Pinot Noir vines. The high altitude and stony soils produce a classic Corton wine—light in color but full of character." The aroma offers hints of dark berries, flowers, nuts, undergrowth, licorice, and spices. It is a balanced, structured wine with juicy acidity and delicate flavors.

The vineyards of Domaine Heitz Lochardet were previously leased to a major négociant until Armand Heitz began reclaiming the land for his family in 2012, when he took over the management of the domaine. He started producing wines under the family label, initially focusing on basic appellations. As more land was returned from the tenants, exceptional cuvées, including the prestigious Grand Cru Chevalier-Montrachet, were added to the portfolio. In just eight years, Armand Heitz has accomplished the remarkable feat of revitalizing a historic winery, now producing both legendary Côtes de Beaune wines and more accessible, experimental offerings. The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Heitz Lochardet is best described as thoughtful minimalism, with an emphasis on shortened aging periods and minimal use of new oak, allowing the exceptional quality of the grapes to take center stage.
