Domaine Jean Yves Bizot Vosne-Romanee 2021

Vendor code : 880

Jean-Yves Bizot is a rare gem in modern Burgundy. His wines are light in color yet refined in character. As a professor of viticulture and oenology in Beaune, Bizot upholds the highest standards in both vineyard and cellar. His holdings, predominantly old vines, are farmed organically. He ferments his Pinot Noirs with whole clusters and avoids the use of sulphur during vinification and élevage. Bizot’s Pinot Noirs demand significant aging to fully reveal their depth, whether it's his Grand Cru Échézeaux or his village-level wines.

Domaine Jean-Yves Bizot Vosne-Romanée 2021 opens with aromas of exotic spices, orange, cherry, and peony. On the palate, it is full-bodied, satiny, and intensely concentrated, with a salty, almost pungent fruit core, juicy acidity, and melting tannins, finishing with a long, savory aftertaste. The wine's energy and harmony suggest excellent potential for long-term development.

As a professor of viticulture and oenology in Beaune, Jean-Yves Bizot lives in Vosne, just across from the former residence of Henri Jayer. The two vignerons, who had neighboring plots in Vosne, often exchanged ideas on vinification. While Bizot adopted some of Jayer’s methods, such as cooler pre-fermentation temperatures, he developed his own distinctive approach—using whole clusters, practicing organic farming, and avoiding the use of SO2 during vinification and élevage. Despite the excellence of his wines, Bizot's Burgundies largely remain under the radar, but his rigorous and unique philosophy ensures that his domaine will serve as a model for future generations in Burgundy. Bizot’s wines require time to fully reveal their character. Even his village-level Vosne-Romanée benefits from around five years of aging, and all of his Vosne-Romanées demand the patience typically reserved for premier crus. Recently, Bizot made intriguing acquisitions in the far north of the Côte de Nuits, in terroirs he believes are undervalued today but were well-regarded centuries ago. These include old-vine parcels in Bourgogne 'Le Chapitre' and Marsannay 'Clos du Roy,' located just south of Dijon. His collection is rounded out by an outstanding Bourgogne Blanc, sourced from an old massale selection of Chardonnay planted near Clos de Vougeot. Hand-bottled, barrel by barrel, and unfiltered, Bizot’s wines are serious Burgundies that reward the patient connoisseur, focusing on purity, finesse, and elegance.
