Tomislav Marković is a talented winemaker known for his authentic wines that accurately reflect the terroir of Baden. They do not have the typical yeasty character of many natural and unfiltered wines, but they do possess a pronounced terroir and purity of fruit. His Pinot Noir On the Rocks 2022 is a prime example of this: a Pinot with an alcohol content of 12.5% that will be the center of attention.
Tomislav Marković’s Pinot Noir On the Rocks 2022 isn’t your everyday Pinot. Born from the soils of Baden, this wine feels like a walk through a cool, misty vineyard just after dawn. Each sip is alive with flavors of wild berries and a subtle earthiness that hints at the terroir that shaped it. With gentle tannins and a lively acidity, this Pinot Noir is all about balance, depth, and that distinct taste of place. Pair it with something equally bold—think wild mushroom pasta or rosemary-crusted lamb chops. Or, let it steal the show on its own. Either way, Pinot Noir On the Rocks 2022 invites you to experience Baden’s refined side.
Tomislav Markovic has roots in Croatia, with family origins in Slavonia—the region known for producing the oak used in large wooden barrels often found in Tuscany and Piedmont. During an annual holiday to his family home, Tomislav’s uncle introduced him to wine, sparking a newfound curiosity and passion. Born in Frankfurt-Rhine-Main, Tomislav Markovic studied business administration from 1993 to 1997 and began working for major banks in Frankfurt in 2000. However, in 2011, he made a dramatic career shift, leaving banking to study viticulture and enology at the Neustadt Weincampus. Alongside his studies, he apprenticed as a winemaker at the Bercher winery in Burkheim am Kaiserstuhl, followed by further training at ‘Viera de Sousa’ in Douro, Portugal, and in 2015 at the renowned ‘Domaine de Montille’ in Volnay, France. Since June 2016, Tomislav has served as a consultant for organic viticulture and enology at the organic viticulture consultancy in Freiburg. In 2015, he began his own winemaking journey, initially using grapes from friends. By 2017, he had rented his first vineyard with 40-year-old Pinot Noir vines, and in 2019, he purchased his first 0.4-hectare plot, where he planted Sauvignon Blanc clones from the Loire Valley. Today, Tomislav produces wines from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc, with minimal production of only 6,000 bottles in 2019. Tomislav Markovic cultivates his vineyards using biodynamic methods, with most fieldwork done by hand. While the grapes he buys are primarily organic, he avoids rigid doctrines, focusing instead on healthy grapes, robust vines, and attentive vineyard practices rather than strict dogmas.
