Marc Hébrart is a producer based in Mareuil-sur-Ay, a village considered among the most prestigious in the Marne Valley. The region is home to iconic names like Billecart-Salmon and the renowned Clos des Goisses vineyard. Many experts believe Mareuil-sur-Ay merits Grand Cru status. Hébrart focuses on crafting champagne with an emphasis on Pinot Noir, complemented by a small amount of Chardonnay, without including Pinot Meunier. He previously supplied grapes to esteemed houses such as Bollinger but later decided to produce champagne under his own name.
Champagne Marc Hébrart Clos Le Léon Millésime 1er Cru 2016 is crafted from 100% Chardonnay sourced from Premier Cru Dizy, specifically the Clos de Léon—a steep, chalk-rich site regarded as one of the finest in the Marne Valley. The vineyard, managed with organic practices, highlights its terroir through meticulous care. Fermented and aged in older 300-liter barrels, the wine undergoes no malolactic fermentation, preserving its bright acidity and structure. It then matures for 72 months on the lees, adding depth and complexity. With a dosage of 3 grams per liter, this Blanc de Blancs delivers freshness and minerality. Though youthful now, the 2016 Clos Le Léon exemplifies Hébrart's precision and dedication to terroir-driven Champagne, standing out as one of his finest cuvées. Drinking Window: 2023–2032.
Jean-Paul Hébrart has managed his family domaine in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ since 1997, succeeding his father, Marc Hébrart. The estate spans 15.5 hectares of vineyards, primarily in the Grande Vallée, a section of the Vallée de la Marne on the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims, with additional Chardonnay vines in the Côte des Blancs. Hébrart practices sustainable viticulture, minimizing synthetic treatments and vinifying each parcel separately to highlight their unique characteristics. While most of his Champagnes are fermented in stainless steel, he introduced a barrel-fermented cuvée in 2004, named Rive Gauche-Rive Droite. As a member of the Club Trésors de Champagne, Hébrart contributes to the growers’ association renowned for its Spécial Club cuvée. His Spécial Club Champagne is widely regarded as one of the finest, and his entire range reflects meticulous craftsmanship, making it a standout among grower Champagnes.
