The 2016 Champagne Vazart-Coquart AD 191 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs base wine was aged in steel tanks and underwent malolactic fermentation. After being placed on lees for a second fermentation in May 2017, the wine was released in June 2023 with a dosage of 1 gram. The aroma highlights the maturity of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. Notes of white nougat, warm vanilla cream puff pastry, ripe citrus fruits, candied orange zest, and a touch of candied ginger are balanced by a slightly chalky finish. The Champagne is both ripe and fresh, with additional nougat on the palate, along with flavors of warm croissants filled with almond and cream.
AD is an abbreviation for Anno Domini, but in this case, the name of the Champagne is not related to a year designation. AD 191 refers to the cadastral coordinates of the La Cerisière plot in Grand Cru Chouilly. This plot was enthusiastically explored by Jean-Pierre Vazart over the years and was vinified separately for the first time in 2016. The plot is small, and Champagne from it is rare, largely due to the characteristics of the particular year. A total of 1,640 bottles were produced.
The AD 191 site was already managed with organic farming practices but had not yet achieved certification when it came to Vazart-Coquart's attention. The site's soil is chalky and calcareous, with a shallow profile. The Chardonnay vines are classified as Vieilles Vignes, offering an excellent foundation for this vintage Champagne. The 2016 growing season posed significant challenges for winemaking. Late frosts in April were relentless, wiping out much of the potential harvest. Heavy rainfall persisted from May to July, but warm, dry weather arrived in late July, and the region experienced a heatwave in August. Shortly before harvest, rain returned, reducing harvest volumes by about a third, particularly for larger producers whose systems were less adaptable. Despite these difficulties, Vazart-Coquart was in a more favorable position and managed to deliver a small but high-quality crop to the winery.
