Champagne Francoise Bedel et Fils Jouvence Brut 2013

Vendor code : 1345

Champagne Françoise Bedel is a small domaine established in 1979 in the village of Crouttes-sur-Marne. The vineyards have a strong history with Meunier, which makes up about 80% of the nine hectares, with vines ranging from 20 to 60 years old. For Françoise Bedel, the character of the terroir plays a key role in shaping each Champagne. In 1982, she adopted organic practices, and by 2006, the domaine earned biodynamic certification.

Champagne Françoise Bedel et Fils Jouvence Brut 2013 is a biodynamic, time-honed expression of the Marne Valley, where Pinot Meunier takes the lead, supported by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Aged extensively on lees (around 9 years), this cuvée highlights the depth and complexity that define Bedel’s approach, offering a Champagne that is both structured and luminous. The 2013 vintage, marked by a cool growing season and late harvest, gives this wine tension and purity, balancing ripe orchard fruit and citrus zest with toasted hazelnut, brioche, and a chalky, saline finish. The gentle mousse and vibrant acidity keep it lifted, while the aging process lends layers of spice, dried flowers, and a subtle oxidative touch. With Françoise Bedel’s reputation for crafting expressive, long-aged Champagnes, Jouvence 2013 is a limited-production release that won’t last long—ideal for those who appreciate precision, texture, and a more contemplative side of Champagne.

Françoise Bedel faced a challenging period as a single mother raising two sons while establishing a new winery. Her eldest son, Vincent, fell seriously ill, and after exhausting all medical options without success, she turned to an elderly couple in a neighboring village who practiced homeopathy. Under their care, Vincent recovered, leading Françoise to abandon conventional medicine and remove all chemical and synthetic treatments from her small winery. Long before biodynamics became widely known in the wine world, she fully embraced the philosophy. Today, the domaine remains small (8.4 hectares), and Françoise and Vincent continue to follow their own path. While many in Champagne focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they remain devoted to Pinot Meunier, which thrives in the Marne Valley’s clay-rich soils mixed with limestone and gravel. Only a small portion of their vineyard is planted with Chardonnay (13%) and Pinot Noir (9%), reinforcing their commitment to Meunier’s expressive character. Their approach is marked by patience—Champagnes often spend over six years on the lees, sometimes much longer. The result is powerful, structured wines with persistent acidity. Though Champagne is rarely decanted, these wines evolve beautifully with air, revealing layers of depth and soul.
