Domaine du Clos des Fées
Visionary winemaking rooted in the rugged soul of Roussillon
In the remote, windswept hills of Vingrau in the northern Roussillon, Domaine du Clos des Fées stands as a testament to one man’s conviction that world-class wines can come from improbable places. Founded in 1997 by Hervé Bizeul—former sommelier, writer, and tireless ambassador for the region—Clos des Fées brings together deep local roots and a fiercely independent spirit.
From day one, Bizeul defied convention. After a short-lived attempt at formal wine school, he struck out on his own with little more than a vision, some old vines, and an unwavering belief in the potential of Roussillon’s sun-scorched slopes. The first vintage was vinified with borrowed space, basic tools, and sheer willpower. And yet, it worked. Within just a few years, Clos des Fées had captured the attention of collectors and critics alike.
Today, the domaine spans a patchwork of old-vine parcels—some over a century old—planted on complex soils of schist, clay-limestone, and iron-rich sandstone. Hervé continues to work much of the land himself, rejecting synthetic treatments and opting for traditional, low-intervention practices in both vineyard and cellar. His goal? Let the terroir speak.
The wines range from bold and cellar-worthy to elegant and immediate. “Clos des Fées” is the flagship—powerful, structured, and age-worthy. “La Petite Sibérie” is a cult bottling from a windswept 1.16-hectare plot where Grenache battles the elements. On the other end of the spectrum, “Les Sorcières” offers charm, approachability, and freshness—red or white. Other cuvées like “Images Dérisoires” (Tempranillo meets old-vine Carignan) and “Un Faune avec son Fifre” (Cabernet Franc with a southern accent) showcase Bizeul’s creative range and confidence.
Domaine du Clos des Fées is not just a winery—it’s an ongoing experiment in what can happen when intuition, resilience, and terroir meet. Whether you're opening a bottle for everyday enjoyment or tucking one away for the next decade, these wines promise intensity, clarity, and a very personal signature.
