Champagne Eric Rodez

Nestled in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, Champagne Éric Rodez is a boutique family estate with roots dating back to 1757. Éric Rodez – the current winemaker and a former oenologist at Champagne Krug – marries tradition with innovation. Under his guidance, the house embraced sustainable viticulture, becoming certified organic and biodynamic. This respect for nature and terroir defines the estate’s identity.

The domaine farms around 6 hectares of Grand Cru vines on Ambonnay’s chalk-rich slopes. Pinot Noir dominates (roughly two-thirds of plantings) with the remainder Chardonnay, yielding fruit of exceptional depth and minerality. Éric cultivates his vines with meticulous care, eschewing chemicals in favor of natural methods. The result is healthy vineyards that faithfully express their terroir. Production is limited (~45,000 bottles per year), ensuring exacting quality control.

In the cellar, traditional methods meet precise craftsmanship. Fermentation occurs in both stainless steel vats and small oak barrels, with most in barrel to build texture and complexity. Malolactic fermentation is often partially or fully avoided to preserve bright acidity. Éric employs a perpetual reserve (solera-like) blending system, layering multiple vintages for consistency and depth, and he ages wines on the lees far longer than required for added nuance.

The house’s signature cuvées illustrate its quality and style. The NV Cuvée des Crayères Extra Brut epitomizes the Rodez style – a multi-vintage blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vinified largely in oak, marrying richness with finesse. The Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut (100% Pinot Noir) captures Ambonnay’s intensity, brimming with red fruit yet finishing dry and precise. At the pinnacle, the Cuvée des Grands Vintages (often pure Pinot from exceptional years, entirely barrel-fermented and no malolactic) offers a layered expression of Ambonnay’s terroir. A Blanc de Blancs and a Rosé complete the portfolio, each upholding the house’s commitment to excellence.

Renowned among connoisseurs and sommeliers – even gracing Michelin-starred wine lists – Champagne Éric Rodez remains a true grower Champagne at heart. With its blend of technical prowess and soulful artistry, it offers an uncompromising, luxurious experience for both seasoned professionals and discerning enthusiasts.
