Champagne Francoise Bedel et Fils

Champagne Françoise Bedel is a boutique family-run house renowned among wine professionals and luxury connoisseurs for its terroir-driven wines and pioneering biodynamic approach. Based in the Vallée de la Marne at Champagne’s westernmost edge, the estate crafts cuvées of exceptional depth and elegance. From its biodynamic vineyards to cellar practices, Françoise Bedel exemplifies a fusion of tradition and respect for nature.

Founded by Françoise Bedel in the early 1980s on her family’s vineyards, the estate’s story is one of passion and perseverance. She transformed a modest property into a respected domaine. As one of the few women vintners of that era, Françoise charted an independent course in viticulture. Today, her son Vincent Desaubeau works alongside her, continuing the family’s artisanal winemaking legacy.

Françoise Bedel was an early pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Champagne. She adopted organic methods long before it was fashionable, began converting in the 1980s and was fully biodynamic by the mid-2000s. The estate’s 8.5 hectares are tended without synthetic chemicals, in tune with lunar cycles. This holistic philosophy yields grapes of exceptional purity – proof that great wine begins in healthy vines. What was once deemed unconventional has since inspired other growers.

Situated in Crouttes-sur-Marne, the vineyards thrive on clay-limestone soils, imparting richness and minerality. Unusually, Pinot Meunier is the star grape here – around 80% of plantings – with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as supporting players. This focus on Meunier gives the wines generous body, aromatic breadth, and a long, fruit-driven finish. In the winery, tradition meets thoughtful innovation: hand-harvested grapes ferment with native yeasts (mainly in enamel tanks, with a touch of neutral oak), and wines age on lees for 5–10 years before disgorgement. Dosage is kept low to zero, ensuring each cuvée articulates its terroir with clarity.

The NV Origin'elle Extra Brut (Pinot Meunier–led) delivers crisp orchard fruit and brioche on a fine mousse. Entre Ciel et Terre offers white flower and honey aromas with a mineral-driven palate. The flagship vintage L'Âme de la Terre—crafted from old-vine Meunier and aged nearly a decade on lees—unfolds layers of baked apple and honeyed richness. All are finished with minimal dosage to highlight purity of terroir.

Champagne Françoise Bedel’s uncompromising approach has earned high esteem. Its cuvées consistently garner 90+ scores from wine critics and enjoy a devoted following among sommeliers and collectors. The house occupies a unique place in Champagne – admired for its sustainable philosophy as well as the finesse of its wines.
