Domaine Hudelot Noëllat Richebourg Grand Cru 2022 is produced from a 0.29-hectare plot, with a production volume of 1,400 bottles. The wine was aged for 16 months in oak barrels, 30% of which were new. Hand-harvested grapes, wild yeast fermentation, and limited production create a fine example of high-end Pinot Noir. The Richebourg Grand Cru 2022 opens with hints of exotic spices, dark berries, raspberries, undergrowth, and lilacs. It features a silky texture and firm tannins. The grapes for this wine are harvested in close proximity to the famous Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.

The soils of Richebourg are a mix of limestone and clay, with excellent drainage due to the vineyard's mid-slope location. The vineyard is divided into two distinct sections: Les Richebourgs, the original part covering about 5 hectares, and Les Véroilles, which was added in 1924 to bring the vineyard to its current size. Les Véroilles, with its more northeasterly orientation, is slightly cooler, resulting in wines with higher acidity, while Les Richebourgs produces denser, more robust wines. Richebourg wines are often described as full-bodied, with a muscular structure and complex flavors of black fruits, earth, spices, and gamey notes. They are renowned for their remarkable aging potential, evolving over decades into increasingly refined and expressive wines. With a firm tannic backbone, Richebourg wines are often compared to their neighboring Grand Crus, such as Romanée-Conti, for their opulence. Some of Burgundy’s most esteemed producers own plots in Richebourg. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) is the largest owner, with 3.5 hectares, followed by Domaine Leroy, Domaine Anne Gros, Domaine Hudelot Noëllat, and Domaine Méo-Camuzet. Each producer offers a unique interpretation of Richebourg's terroir, contributing to its legendary status.

Immediately impressive with a beguiling combination of fruit expression, silkiness and length. The nose boasts raspberry, bramble and kirsch with notes of violets, earth and smoke. The texture is deceptively silky, and with time the firm tannins and rich extract make themselves felt and lead into a lingering finish. The grapes come from 0.3ha in Les Richebourgs, next to DRC – they are mostly destemmed and gently fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask. Enormous ageing potential.

Fast approaching the century mark, these vines produced a wildly fragrant wine with Bing cherries, baked blueberries, lilacs, vanilla bean and kitchen spice. The attack is graciously smooth with lusty-ripe tannins and sleek extract. Suavely integrated acidity and flinty minerality provide effortless energy and brightness. Already very complete, this will be even better in time. Wait at least seven to ten years.

This vineyard tends to make fuller and richer wines than Romanée St-Vivant but it doesn’t show in the colour. The bouquet, though, is another matter: magically perfumed, an imperial majesty that fills every part of the mouth, luxurious but never vulgar, swamping the present and entirely necessary structure, just a point of youthful bitters alongside the acidity at the back. Very grand indeed! An extra dimension. Drink from 2035-2045+.
