Vendor code : 1580

Jean-Pierre is an extremely nice guy, full of energy and humour, almost euphoric when it comes to his work, a thoroughbred winemaker for whom his products mean the world. The Champagne Spécial Club 2017 from Vazart-Coquart is a Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs made entirely from Chardonnay. Sourced from the finest parcels, it comes from a single harvest and matures on its lees for a minimum of 72 months, offering a fresh and vibrant expression of Champagne Blanc de Blancs.

This exceptional Blanc de Blancs from Vazart-Coquart, a member of the esteemed Club Trésors de Champagne since 1996, reflects the pinnacle of independent winemaking. Crafted from 100% Chardonnay grown in the Grand Cru vineyards of Chouilly, with vines averaging 45 years in age, it is rooted in chalk-rich soils that enhance finesse and minerality. This Special Club champagne, sourced from the prized plots of Le Mont Aigu and La Cerisière, is a vibrant, full-bodied wine. Its elegant profile captures the artistry of Vazart-Coquart and the unique character of Chouilly’s terroir.

Champagne Vazart-Coquart house is located in Chouilly. Chouilly is not necessarily the first name that springs to mind when you think of the Côte des Blancs. This is probably due to the fact that Chouilly was only awarded Grand Cru status in 1985, whereas the more southerly municipalities, such as Vertus, Avize, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, have held this status for much longer. If you drive eastward from Épernay along the southern bank of the Marne towards the Côte des Blancs, the first place you will reach is Chouilly. Of the approximately 1,600 hectares belonging to this village, 522 hectares are planted with vines, 99% of which are Chardonnay. The most famous site is a hill called Butte du Saran, crowned by the Château du Saran, which was built in 1801 by Jean-Rémy Moët and now belongs to the LVMH empire. The vineyards are located in both the western and southern parts of the commune, which is quite unusual for the Côte des Blancs, where they are otherwise almost exclusively south-facing or on the plain. The Vazarts own around eleven hectares in both areas of the village, with 94% planted with Chardonnay averaging 44 years old, and the rest with Pinot Noir. For a long time, the vineyards were cultivated according to the guidelines of the ‘Haute Valeur Environnementale’ sustainability certificate, focusing on plant protection strategy, biodiversity conservation, fertiliser management, and quantitative water management. However, this was not enough for Jean-Pierre in the long run. He wanted to work not only sustainably but also organically. He completed this certification in 2020, though it came at the expense of his favourite project, the ‘Réserve Perpétuelle,’ which he initiated in 1982 and which he will eventually have to part with.
